“What is Ghost Ship up to today?”

Good question, Ghost Ship. I was getting an annoying squeak from my leaf springs- the front bushing specifically. I have a thread about upgrading the preinstalled bushing that comes in Dakar leaf packs (which is now obsolete since they come with polyurethane bushings). I replaced my bushing with Wheelers bushings and then again to Dobinsons bushings some time last year. One thing to note is that the Dobinsons bushings have a thicker shoulder which makes them fit tighter in the stock frame hanger up front. Sounds great, right? Well the tighter fit squeezed out all the grease I had previously applied to the bushing and I was getting an annoying squeak that made my truck sound like it had mid-70s Chevy suspension. Having known about the siping that some bushings have to keep grease in place, I saw no need to get new bushings if I could add my own siping. I resorted to my leather craft tools and found something that would work. Here are the comparisons and results.

Stock siping in the bushing barrel:

    Stock bushing face, pre-mod:

Comparison after the mid and the leather tool I used:

I think it worked but time will tell. I had a nice quiet ride around town after the install but I’ll be keeping an eye on longevity of the “upgrade”.

    Happy quarantine, everyone!

    EDIT: gone

Anyone need some stock body mount bushings? I pulled these off a 2019 so super low miles. Should fit 2nd gens as well if I’m not mistaken. Free, just pay shipping or come get them. They’re trash in a week.

This rack IS BUILT and WILL fit a softopper. The rack looks more amazing in person and is so robust. It was built for me but unfortunately I own a bestop and the frame of the bestop is a bit wider at the top than a softopper so the frame was hitting and couldn't be installed. I live hours away so we tried to do it all over messages and photos. We thought we had everything covered but one tiny detail was missed. Ghost Ship is a stand up guy and his work is amazing. Anyone looking for a rack to go over a softopper would be lucky to snag this. He custom made it so that there mounts for an awning on the passenger side, RTT mounts on the bars and full plates on the side from unlimited customization.

Detail of the full length mounting plates. This helps retain the seal of the topper without leaving weird gaps.

Is that high enough to fold the top down?

No. The topper needs almost 12” of additional clearance to be able to fold down. While it can be built, at that height the rack just looks really goofy. An option would be to make a removable top section for the rack but that would still make it a pain to fold down the topper easily IMO with the addition of extra bolts/tools needed to fold it down.
