She wants an FJ 40...bad....she found one locally for $2200 OBO. Its a '69 FJ40 w/ the 6 cylinder and 3 speed gearbox.

The guy says it runs and drives fine..but the brakes are shot (no details). It looks a tiny bit rust in the the pics, its missing the doors.

Owner says he just did plugs/wires/cap, etc...

    Has 35'' BFG AT's

What are some things we need to look out for when we go see it?

I know i am going to check closely for rust, especially on the frame.

If the motor runs/sounds good and if it drives good, no bad rust on frame, etc...she is going to offer him $1700 cash. Its going to be a fix up project of ours

Anything specific we should look out for?

If it's that cheap it's probably got some problems. Should be a fun (expensive) project though.

$2200 will need work. Never seen one that cheap that doesnt need a lot of work. Better to spend few thousand more and get one that already has a clean 350 swap done.

    Why a 350 swap?

Are the original straight 6's not good motors?

I/She would never put a GM motor in this thing.

    It would stay toyota.

It's a HEAVY low powered 6cyl. That's why 350's are the way to go. Cheap HP, parts are everywhere, and it could potentially give better MPG than the old 6.

We also need to see pics of your gf, that way we'll know what she looks like when we get to vote for her to be a saint... ;)

Exactly. Not to mention the 3speed is a turd to drive on the street. No one leaves the straight six in these things unless you're going for an all original show type FJ40. You could go with a better toyota motor, but you will spend a ton more doing it. 350s are cheap and the adapters to install them are widely available. 350, 700R4 and the original T-case is the best combo.

Yes, its going to be a restore project for us...albeit a slow but steady one.

Thanks for the info...But if the motor runs good we will keep it for now...maybe swap in something bigger/better in the future.

And there are pics of her in the UG :D

    thanks for info

Good question...I put it in the general auto section for a reason
