What’s up guys! New member here and I was told that if my Tacoma came from the factory without the glass break sensor already installed then my only option is to purchase an entire new alarm system from Tacoma. This seems like total dealership bullshit so I figured this would be my best shot at getting a straight answer. Any info would help out guys thanks!

Total bullshit, don't fall for it. Downtown toyota in Oakland sold my wife the same story and she bought it. They installed a twenty dollar audiovox box under the dash, and tried to say it was a toyota system. Get a good after market alarm system from a reputable place that sells car audio and alarms, it will cost you a lot less and work a lot better.

I had to take the dealer to small claims to get the money back. Dealers are scum and will never buy a car through a dealership again after this experiance.

Any stereo alarm shop can add onto your factory alarm, even if it’s just the basic one that comes with all Tacomas stock. You can have them add a tilt sensor, glass break sensor etc etc onto it so you can use the same key fob.

I have a Viper alarm on my truck. But if you don’t want to spend money on an entire new alarm like that, just have a shop add what you want.

Glass breakage sensor (GBS) is a distributor add on to the OEM factory alarm. Toyota GBS is just over a $100 from the dealer and it is about an hour labor to install. You also receive GBS stickers for your side windows!

The part number for a GBS on many 3rd gen auto Tacomas is PT398-35160, but you may want to double check this PN for the applicability for your vehicle.

There's actually two different versions of the factory GBS, one for use with the factory alarm (TVIP V2) and one for use without factory alarm (TVIP V5). Both come with the microphone and the add-on GBS ECU. As with all accessories Toyota has an install procedures.

Thanks a lot guys I will be checking into this. I am a low voltage fire alarm tech so is this something I would be able to do myself? I’ve also seen some people say they got fault codes and required the dealership to flash the ecu. Can either of you guys confirm or deny this claim? I just want to avoid voiding my warranty aswell.

Do you know if the part number listed in the post above yours is the correct part to add onto a stock Tacoma alarm?

I'm not 100% as I'm still researching myself. Considering it's plug and play I might as well add it, losing gear via the window can be pretty costly.

From what I’ve read TVIP V5 is the only one that works on 2016+ Tacoma’s, only difference is you don’t install the hood latch connector if you have an alarm. I’ve got one on order, should be here in a few days, I’ll update to if it does work with factory alarm.

2017. So identical to yours for the purpose of this glass break sensor install.

(again, below is what I’ve read, will confirm next weekend when I install mine)
Only need techstream if you don’t already have factory alarm. Those instructions are for vehicle without alarm, if you have alarm I think you can ignore the hood catch part and techstream part. (I believe the harness plugs maybe be slightly different as well.)

Hey brother did you end up installing that GBS? I’ve been doing some research and I think I’m gonna purchase an Evo-one for remote start and I can add a shock sensor to that module so that’s the route I am thinking about now.

not yet, arrives Friday, so hopefully this weekend. I’ve got shock sensors in two of my other vehicles and glass in my other Toyota. Shock does not really work all that well compared to glass, you Actually want both. But depends on what you are after. If the evo one does what you want, then go for it.

I believe I will have the option to connect both once I get my hands on the device and can play with it a bit. I am still curious about your results so I hope it’s just an easy plug and play.
