i was changing my oil yesterday, after i dropped my skid plate i got a real good look at the mechanical parts of my truck that are plagued just like my frame is/was. if you're unfamilar i have another thread about my frame. but anyways this is just unacceptable. if i hit a few of these really caked on rusted pieces, huge chunks of metal come off. i called the stealership and made an appt for saturday. if they cant do anything for me, im gonna go to the next highest level becuase im really worried some of these peices may fail after not much longer. heres some eye candy for ya

it looks like my truck has been under the ocean for 15 years, not like a 5 year old truck should look IMO. keep in mind this is an 05 with 58K on it...

I'm no expert but I wouldn't be happy if that were my truck. I can totally understand why your frustrated about this. I had a 1999 f-150 with 160 000km's and it never looked half as bad as your truck and I live in a winter climate. That looks aweful

How much does it cost to have the underside of your truck painted I wonder.

The good thing (well, I guess good) is that if it becomes a safety issue, you better believe they are gonna fix it instead of possibly facing a lawsuit eventually.

mine is starting to look like that and I got it brand new from the dealership in 2007. They told me that they had solved all of the previous rusting problems. What a bunch of dirty rotten liars.

Toyota is not going to do nothing for you being the second owner nor would I think if even the first owner.

You bought a 5 year old used truck from a rust belt state. What did you expect? I really do not see nothing that bad other than a truck that was probably well used through the winter and never hosed down to get the road salt out.

    This is not Toyota's problem.

Looks like a candidate for a good undercoating. Should've done it from day 1.
People have to take a bit of responsibility and stop blaming everyone else for their problems,
You live on the east coast, you do get winter in Pittsburg don't you??, likely salt is used, it going to rust if not taken care......as far as I'm concerned its your fault not Toyota's..then you wonder why vehicle prices are so damned high...IMHO.

i do agree with you, but i bet they fix a few of those things like the steering.

my grandfather went to some dealer in allegheny, got a little over 9 grand for a 10 year old truck.

If they do, it is out of the kindness of their heart and not any requirement to do so.

The OP's situation is beyond reasonable understanding to expect a company to fix. The time elapsed, conditions previously driven in and being second owner is a stretch to expect some help out on. There is a point where an owner has to accept responsibility that things wear out and some conditions accelerate that wear. As some point you have to put money into a vehicle to keep it up.

I can not go to coastal area and not expect there to be rust free 5 year old used vehicle from salt air and water intrusion. Nor can I expect the same of buying one in a rust belt state where they use road salt 4-6 months out of the year.

I honestly think that truck has another good 10+ years left in it, if taken care of from this point forward.

its my fault becuase i tried to take care of it but its too late to fix what the original owner didnt take care of?

and there is something not right when my 05 looks worse than my dad's 95 chevy that was bought new in 95, been thru every pittsburgh winter to date, and the chevy looks nothing like the condition my truck is in.

edit: well every pittsburgh winter except this last one, it died by then. im not saying my truck should have 0 rust on it, but alot of these items should not have so much rust on them already that it is a safety item. and why should i not bitch to the dealership? they told me there is a 5 year 60K miles rust warranty on these trucks. obviously toyota feels that is an adequate warranty of the rust, and i feel that some of these parts have become unsafe before the warranty is out.

You have an '05 truck and they aren't involved in the extended frame warranty like the 2001-2004 Tacomas.
Granted, the frame has rust but not enough to qualify for much from Toyota at this time.
I have a 2001 and my frame WAS rusty. Enough to get the frame replaced.
Your frame is rusty but nothing like the frames that were replaced.
Try to clean it up but haven't heard of any extra being done for 2005 and newer trucks at this time.

Get is well documented at the dealership. Toyota has a history of rust issues and you will need all the proof should something happen to the truck. Not blaming anyone for this but you should always cover your ass, Toyota has a team of lawyers to cover theirs.

I do not think it is your fault but it is what it is. As to the warranty, get to checking but your rust perforation warranty will not cover what you are wanting done.

I truly wish you well in getting some satisfaction from the dealer but this will be a higher up call from Toyota corporate.

Your comparison to another vehicle has no legal standing and is just opinionated at best. With the exception the federal emissions warranty, the other warranties are just marketing tools that basically state Toyota will back up certain things for a certain amount of time. If you read a detail copy of the rust perforation warranty, you better have areas that are totally eaten through with rust, hence the definition of "perforation" or holes.
