Going to be a 2021 owner in 2 weeks

Hello everyone!

I just put my deposit down for a 2021 metallic Tacoma SR double cab 4x4. It should be here by the end of month.

What are some must do items?
So far I found:

Power Tailgate lock (considering ordering this https://www.runnin4tacos.com/products/tailgate-lock-3rd-gen-tacoma-2016-2021 )

Tailgate mat mod to hold it in place (I got it for $80 at the dealer)

Ordered all weather floor liners

Ordered center console tray

considering a hard tonneau cover under $500 since money is a little tight for now

considering cheap side steps for the wife

does the hose clamp mod still apply to the third gen to prevent tail gate theft?

any other ideas or suggestions? Happy to have found this forum!

wut? If you have a cover no worries. The mat doesn't shift around, they're pretty heavy and grippy. I wouldn't worry about that.

Yup. It's not perfect but typically tailgate theft is opportunity. If you make it complicated then they'll move on 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time, whether it's a 3$ hose clamp or a 95$ impossible-to-break lock, they're getting your tailgate. Well worth it. Reminds me I need to do it. Long of the short: There's no practical difference between fancy locks and a hose clamp (power tailgate lock is great, reminds me I need to do that too....)

I’d look into the OEM tailgate lock.

 

If you’re looking for a new hard (folding) tonneau, there isn’t anything under $500. I think the best bang for the buck is the Rough Country (which is the same cover as the Rugged E series, just re-branded and $100 cheaper)...

Interesting I have a 21 OR as well and never saw a 4x4 on tailgate

100% true

I had my 2018 SR, base model for 3 years, and 42K miles.

I didn't know I needed steps, bedmat, bed light, seat heaters, LED headlights. More time I spent on TW, more "must have" mods I need!


$23,000 Tacoma vs $45,000 Tacoma

 

Hell yeah, the 2nd pic looks like a $45K Tacoma. Plus, you can sell all your OEM parts.

 

As far as the tonneau cover, maybe if you haggle with the dealer as i did you can get the factory one at cost. I was billed $400 for the factory trifold cover. As far as the tailgate lock...its been the factory key here, and its ok. Bed mat is mandatory imo. You can either try to get a factory one, or they sell an aftermarket gator for around $90 with free shipping.

 

That’s cause I put it on there, haha. I took off the big red TRD OR 4x4 stickers on the bed sides, so I stuck that emblem on just to make sure everyone still knows damn well it’s a 4x4, lol.

I lost all my haggling power on my trade, I had a 2016 Rav4 (wifes) and basically traded it for the same price that I paid for it a year and a half ago.

I’m gonna text the sales manager and see what he can do.

I did get the bedmat for $80 shipped from a toyota dealer in FL lol
