Hay gang, listening to the local radio out of Susanville, most sites at the Gold Lake OHV campground will be closed from July 9 to September 9, only three spots will stay open. Did not hear if it was stated what was to be done, but will be positive they say. Maybe we'll get decent toilets. I'll check further if someone wants me to, The FS office in Mohawk which is closest to Gold Lake isn't far away.
You can PM me if you like.

Bowman Road still has a sign at the bottom, went to Glacier Lake backpacking with friends over the weekend, what a crowd there.

The Bowman sign is purely because the bridge is out. If you have 4wd you can easily make it past. 2WD is possible with the right setup.

I heard you had to be self contained since last year or starting this year, so new toliets are great. The old ones at least let you know someone was in there. Some of the places they use OHV funds don't make sense to me or I agree with.

You can have uncomfortable conversations with the way they're setup now.

Don't think I made it there last summer, had a head injury early August, so the balance of the month into September had me in the hospital or rehab. Then the doctor told me to take it very easy for three weeks.

Closure is for install of new solar-pit-toilets (60 days to build a toilet... crazy.) . The old one was decommissioned a while ago, and it has been "pack in/pack out" the last year or so.

I'll be up July 5-8 just, by random chance, before the closure.

Speaking of closed roads... the road to Leavitt Lake (FS Route 077) and the road to the Dardanelles (County Line Road) have thwarted my summer trips already. Forest Service seems to not worry much about closed roads.

The whole notion of closing a place because there’s no toilet seems wrong when they’ve been open without for a while. Maybe it’s so workers aren’t bothered by campers? Other closures don’t make a lot of sense either.

it remained open while there were no toilet facilities, as long as folks packed out their poo. This upcoming closure is exactly what you guessed: to make sure no issues arise during toilet install.

I've worked for the feds (USFS and NPS) and it's amazing how long some simple tasks take. I now work for a private firm and efficiency is key. I'd be fired if it took me 60 days to dig a toilet!!!

Not digging a whole of of anything. These are supposed to be solar powered dehydrators. You dig a hole 4-6 inches deep and set the unit.

idk. They left boating campgrounds open so they must be planning to have a giant crew?

There is a solar potty at the south end of Grass Lake by the Plumas Eureka State Park. Creepy, open the door and a motion sensor starts a fan. I don't have that technology at home. Don't see how it will dry all the piss left.

The solar shitter uses the fan to dry the waste. So it runs all the time and doesn’t have anything to do with moving air inside the poop room.

Or pretty much any setup. My neighbor made it there in his GF's Prius a couple weekends ago. Said he ran into another Prius there too. o_O

They made it past the down bridge in a Prius? Everything except that would be doable, as long as you were moving slow, but it would have taken some serious momentum to get a Prius through the creek bed last weekend given how rutted out it was.

... yeah confirmed it wasn't this year. Must have been when the bridge was up I guess. :crapstorm:
