Just got a new 2018 TRD off-road, I'm looking for a solid dash cam. Is a go pro something that could be used or should I stay away from that and get something better?

I wouldn’t opt for a GoPro for a few reasons

They won’t turn on/off when the truck turns on/off

They won’t start and stop recording on their own when the truck turns on/off

They don’t have the ability to loop footage (meaning once the memory card is full, the camera will not record until you empty the card or put in an empty one. Dash cams will overwrite the oldest files once the card fills up, meaning you never have to mess with it. Depending on the capacity of your card, you have the last 8-48 or more hours of drive time saved. That’s plenty to retrieve footage of an accident)

Gopros aren’t meant to be in such a hot environment, especially directly in the sun, for such a long period of time. They will overheat and fail.

There are more reasons, but these are the main ones.

I personally prefer Thinkware (I use the F800pro) for their quality and long lifespan. But many others have good success with cheaper brands like rexing and some of the other Amazon brands

Echoing everything @destin_meeks noted. Grab another one that seems solid - I personally use a Rexing V1. Then grab a gopro mount for that camera.

By chance do you have a link for the mount you bought? I just got the same camera and the heat melted the provided 3m mount right off. I'd like to keep the low profile look of the camera but can't find a good clip mount

If you have a buddy with a 3D printer, the file should also be available on that link. That could save you some money

Unfortunately, I don't. But 13 bucks with shipping isn't bad if its a quality product. Any issues since you installed yours?

None at all - I 3D printed mine using the CAD file though (I don't think that'll make much of a difference but the plastics the printer uses might). I've had zero issues - had it up for several months now.

Perfect, glad to know it'll hold up in our California summers. Thanks for all the advice

I would get a dedicated dash cam, a dash cam is meant to always be recording. You dont want to have an incident just to find out the go pro was not recording. Ive been running this one for a year and half now with no issues https://amazon.com/gp/product/B01GNMBC4G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 they also have a power supply you can get that will allow it to run when the vehicle is off but not kill your battery https://amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZIYHXT/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
