So - I scored a free Yakima roof rack. I'm not entirely sure I want to run it on the roof though. I'm thinking instead of fabricating some cross bed rails out of 1.5" plated and slotted angle steel and having it over the bed, close to the cab.

Anyone run anything similar? Anyone have any thoughts on problems I might have?

No towers, just attaching the cross bars to the bed rails, rack secured on top of that.

So just a basket or something? Rack usually refers to the base system of crossbars and towers.

If you are going to mount that basket, I would use a proper rack.
