Nice !!! good job & yeah I've seen alot of post here with guys having all these driveline noise/Ujoint failures issues (many on 2nd gens with lo miles) & it seemed to me that the mileage some said they had & the issues they were having also could only be one thing..... simple lack of maintenance/chassis lube/driveline lubing, I've got 166K on my truck, same U joints as far as I can tell. (ok, bought it with 94K on it already)

I've put on at least 70K , no driveline issues at all, I lube mine once a month, minimum, more during winter when we do alot of runs in rain/mud etc;.....;)

Does anyone know how many and locations for a 1996 2WD? I am still looking but no luck yet. One web site says 0 fittings. Could that be correct?

Not sure on your year but yeah theres a chance you have a "perma-seal" type driveline (I hate them) meaning they were lubed one time at the manufacturer & its supposed to last the lifetime of vehicle, but if it fails its driveshaft time unless you get after market Ujoints with grease zirks on them

Don't know about the '96. The Tacoma 1st Gen 2wds don't have any zerks. Here's an article I found that has some good pics of the zerk locations on the Tacoma 1st Gen:

    Question:
I used synthetic Valvoline today with the moly stuff in it for all the zerks. Do I need to change it out immediately on all the zerks except for the double cardon and slip yoke?

    Thanks!
    Jason

    Ahhhh...I'm such a noob.....

Of course the '96 is in the 1st Gen Family ('95-'04)! I used to have a 2000 2wd and it had the sealed drive shaft (no zerks on it).

    Please forgive my noobness!

I get under there and grease it up about once a month as well or immediately after a really long and dusty off roading session.

One question to all of you, how much grease do you put in there- 2 good pumps or until you hear the tiny splat sound? I don't want to be under or over greasing.

Heres a couple tips, the black grease/graphite is the cheapest grease, it overheats easily, it may harden or turn to dust, when mixed with lithium or other types of higher quality grease.

The orange grease/ lithium is a decent general purpose grease, and its cheap, it does not mix well with Black/graphite grease.

The blue grease/polyrex/pyroplex/thermaplex (Mobil, Chevron, LPS, etc) This grease is high quality, it comes in a general purpose, hightemp, lowtemp, wet, mixes. This grease doesnt overheat, it provides far superior lubrication all around. Its more expensive, and it does not mix with black/ graphite grease well. Use the general purpose mix.

Lithium and poly or pyro do mix, graphite (black) is low quality and does not mix well with any other grease. Push the graphite out, and upgrade to lithium or poly/pyro.

On my 04 2wd Prerunner, I only greased 1 zirk on the yoke the first time, after reading this I went back and located all the other zirks and upgraded to blue LPS thermaplex grease.

I have 8 on mine. Word of caution the two on the "yokes" I think it is, will take grease continually. I was unaware of this and put like 20 pumps into each one expecting something to happen. No issues so far but I'm pretty sure thats overkill. I'm gonna skip these two for a while when I do this again.

What I've read and do myself is 7-10 pumps on the rear slip yoke or until it starts to move/expand. I would not skip it, just use less next time.

I have one from harbor freight that works just as well as any of the others I've owned, think it was like 15$

Look through some truck mags and find a 50% off coupon before you go. :)

You should be able to pick one up at any auto parts store though, or even some hardware stores. Oh even walmart or grainger or etc... Avoid the mini ones and get a flexible line.
