Oh and I run valvoline syn power in all my joints and wheel bearings and use it on everything else. Don't matter that much, even the CRC sta-lube black tube will be fine if you use it often.

Hmm judging from that one guys post that also had the 03' 4WD I should be looking for 8 fittings? If I can't find them should I just roll the truck back a few feet (unless there is a different way to rotate the shaft to reveal the fittings)? Is there an actual diagram or schematic that points out all of them for idiots like me? I haven't greased anything since I got the truck and I'm positive the shop wouldn't do that just because they felt like being nice. Had the grease gun filled for 2 weeks now and got one of them creepers so i can try to see all angles underneath.

So if i broke off my rear two (closest to where the DS/UJoints meet the Diff) during my last outting...

What do i need to replace them? Is there a 'one size fits all' zerk or are there different thread types that i have to worry about?

First you have to extract the sheered zirks, make sure the area is clean of all old grease, any metal shavings (if you have to drill it out) Generally the zirks are the same for automotive (as far as size goes)

If the extraction went well you should be able to just thread new zirks into place & lube away...

Just did my 1999 4x4 after reading numerous threads and looking at tons of sites and videos (also simultaneously researching changing out all my fluids). Bought two grease guns and a tube of lithium grease and a tube of moly fortified lithium. My understanding was that the double cardan joint gets the moly. That was what I did. 8 zerks total on the driveshafts. 192,000 miles and I just bought it. No one had greased these in a long time because she runs a lot smoother now!

Reviving this thread, for shits and giggles...mostly because there seems to be varying #'s of zerks that owners have found on their various models of 1st gens.

    I have an 01' 3.4 Manual Trans 4WD.

I had 9 zerks total on the drivetrain.

2 @ the rear axle joint
3 @ the double cardan joint
1 @ the rear of the transfer case
3 on the driveshaft going forward from the transfer case to the front wheels

Some of those really can hide, especially if you are at the wrong angle (axle needs rotated). Also, if you haven't greased and played with your zerks in a while, they may be covered in greased dust!!

EDIT: there are 3 on the driveshaft going from the transfer case to the front wheels. List above has been updated.

2 @ the rear axle joint
3 @ the double cardan joint
1 @ the rear of the transfer case
2 on the driveshaft going forward from the transfer case to the front wheels

I took this list out and pumped grease into all eight... thanks!

I already have a ping noise while accelerating from a stop in the rear. Is it already to late to grease? Or do you think I can lube it up and save it.

If it's a chirp coming from there, in sync with the wheel rpm, in my books it's to late, joint is dry and damaged.

That's not what I wanted to hear. I heard the double cardan joint on these is a pain in the a**

If you're replying to what I said, I should have been clearer, I was speaking of the rear u-joint to the diff. I don't know if the double cardan will mimic the same noise, never heard a bad one. But I've heard plenty of the regular u-joints, front of drive shaft to transfer case and rear u-joint next to the diff especially in Wal-Marks parking lots. Chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp when you take off till the sound quits because of speed.

yes that's what's happening. Hopefully it is just a U-joint. I will grease them all up and pray. Thanks.
