Greasing Entire Drive Shaft U-Joints (5 Zerks Total)

I don't know if the zerks are replaceable on the OEM u-joint. I've heard that some are threaded and others are pressed in.

 

riiiiiight so we just go buy some lubricant from Prolong

which has had federal trade commission lawsuits

for false advertising and claims about lubricating properties...PASS on this

 

When I ran into the problem of a zurk not taking grease I would replace the zurk and that almost always solved the problem. Same for the one that is spitting grease back out as the ball check is not working. Hope this is helpful.

After reading another reply, I guess it may be possible that the zurks are not replaceable but I am simply unsure.

LC says, "I don't know that I have ever encountered a non-replaceable zurk but if there is a hex shoulder below the ball portion of the zurk then it should unscrew with the proper socket--always use a proper sized socket as you only get one shot at it."

 

Lubed up my zerks today.

Thought you had read my article on location of grease zurks on a 2013 Tacoma access cab. I sent a longer answer but it sent before I was ready and I don't have a clue where it went???? Anyway, have a good day--LC

 

Greased up mine today...20 minutes. I have a 2011 Base Access Cab 4WD and there was no rock guard in front...easy access.

 

The rock guard is on the 2013 access cab.

Greased my drive shafts all five zerks. There did not appear to be any grease inside them, grease pumped in easily a dozen or so pumps until resistance was met and grease started coming out where it was going in. I had a little bit of a shudder on hard launches that appears to be gone now. First time it was done since new and now at 49k miles I wish I had done it sooner, like on day one...

 

Anybody done this on a 2012 access cab? Still 5/6 zerks? I was taking a quick look and didn't see any on the rear shaft. Only the front. Snapped a few quick pics.





And found the front zerks.

They are there you just have to move the truck some to see the rear ones. Have someone else moving the truck while your looking is the easiest way - Pushing it in N btw.

 

I found them! I didn't realize that they were on the ends. I was looking on the insides, like the front drive line. Thank you!

Did this today, very easy. Rear 3 zerks took roughly 8-9 pumps and front 2 took roughly 5-6 pumps.

 

I was surprised to find all took about 3 pumps. Got lucky DS was aligned perfect to get to all of them.

 

Just for clarification--

Is anyone here going through the trouble of removing the drive shafts so that the slide yokes can be lubed? Since this is the only place that specifies moly grease, you don't even need a grease gun for this application.
