I was curious as to the possible reasons why my intake manifold valves would have collected greasy gunk inside them? Is it normal or is it a symptom of a bigger issue? What should I use to clean them? I suppose cleaner valves mean smoother air flow into the engine and better running.

Usually it means :"Stop using cheap ass fuel and cheap ass oil" :D

Edit: And that is some cheap ass pictures, I can barely see inside...

Thanks. Now, do you know what product i could use to clean the valves from the existing grime ? Can I use regular household cleaners, like Simple Green or should I use a special product ? I thought a regular household product could do as it is only air going through them.

foampile can you take better pictures, from the one you have not sure what that buildup is.
If in fact its only oil than Rock Lobster idea will help, but if its carbon than not much.
Is it just in intake or on valves too? If its on valves than strange because fuel should clean them spotless.

Jam some Seafoam down there, and watch the carbon melt away. take out your sparkplugs and crank the engine a few turns to get the cleaner out. repeat if necessary.

This useful writeup suggests sortof in between the brake master cylinder and the fuse box, attached to the sheetmetal. Do you think this generic can also would do ?

I think he's talking about the plastic flapper valves. They tumble the air as it goes into the engine to simulate variable intake runner length, which helps optimize the power band. If I'm right, fuel is introduced downstream of the flapper valves (I dont think my 2.7 has these, but I had a VW GTI that had them).
