I've never been a fan of sit and pray it goes away and then pray some more it doesn't come back, and pray some more that it doesn't hurt my truck or worse me.
It doesn't take much effort to get a code read and know if it's something potentially catastrophic..

Good Idea but in the mean time do some research.

I'm confused too, those lights are triggered by seperate ECU's.

There has been reports of engine wire harnesses damaged by rodents. Any chance you had any critters gnawing on the wireing. When that happens, all sorts of crazy stuff can happen.

Well, it looks like the "pray it goes away" approach isn't going to work as I had expected... The lights are back and I have a date with the stealership. I bought my truck certified used. I think there is a 100,000 mile warrantee. I will have to check. You guys know? Maybe my luck will change after all.

Just about all the scanners out there do a good job telling you what code is present. The problem with some is that some codes are thrown and disappear. You need a scanner with some logging ability.

Any scanner is a good investment. With a bit of googleing, you can find out what "may" be the cause of the CEL coming on.

These forums are also wonderful tools for finding out what is wrong with the car too.

As for the OP, I wish I knew the code numbers that are being thrown. Any Autozone can scan your truck for free.

Sounds like the Cam Position Sensor or the Oil Control Valve for the Variable Valve Timing.

If it is running smooth and with no issues it is more likely the sensor that is not sending the feedback to the ECU.

If it was running like crap it would more likely be the Oil Control Valve sticking etc. As the VVT isn't working the engine would not perform correctly.

    The manual says:

    Retarded cam timing:
With warm engine and engine speed of between 500 rpm and 4,000 rpm, all conditions (a), (b) and (c) met (2 trip detection logic)

    (a) Difference between target and actual intake valve timings more than 5°CA (Crankshaft Angle) for 4.5 seconds

    (b) Current intake valve timing fixed (timing changes less than 5°CA in 5 seconds)

    (c) Variations in VVT controller timing 19°CA or less of maximum delayed timing (retarded)

    Trouble Areas:
    • Valve timing
    • Oil control valve (OCV)
    • OCV filter
    • Camshaft timing gear assembly
    • ECM

Awesome answer! Thank you so much!

It is running and driving smooth so my guess would be the sensor is having some issues.

Any guess how much that would/should cost me to fix or replace?

hey BRUIN8124, my check engine light just came on two days in a row, has the same code P0012. i also got a B2799 don't know what that code is. can't find it in the repair manual, code doesn't match any of the other codes.

what did you do, and how much do it cost?

I ended up canceling the appointment. The truck is running and driving fine and the light went off. I couldn't really afford it with the holidays around the corner. I am not sure what that second code could be. I would check Google. After the new year I will get it all taken care of. I will let you know.
