Grey wire mod

OME 883# on Tundra 5100's, OMD custom 3" leafsprings, rear shock relocation, Ivan Stewart TRD rims w/285/75/16's, '02 bumper MOD, Famous Fabrications sliders , LED interior/exterior lights, bed bar, Custom tube bumper, Old school KC day lighters,Red Ring 8" HID flood, Kenwood vhf 2M.. umm some other shit I'm forgetting right now
    I do believe its the same for auto or manual..

    Hey guy's, I have wanted to do this Grey wire mod since I got my truck. I am confused, my truck is an sr5 model, there are no TRD decals. I do have an elocker. Did Toyota make a sr5 4x4 model that is not trd?

    2004 trd off road 4X4, 265 75 r16 bfg at, bilstein 5100 all around front at 1in, rear firestone ride rite air bags
    Yup mines a trd sr5 4x4 mouth full. I did the grey wire mod and it works great especially in the sand or mud or whenever you dont want to put it in 4x4.

    Question about this mod:

    I get that it allows you to use your locker in 2wd as well as 4wd.
    But you also have to be traveling at 5mph or less to activate the locker.

    So, can someone describe a situation where this would be more useful than just putting it in 4-Lo and then using the locker if I need it. I mean, I already have to slow down to under 5mph, or already be crawling along. I don't tend to drive my truck steadily under 5mph unless I'm already in 4wd anyhow.

    Just wondering. I know its a popular mod. I just want to understand it's benefit on the road/trail.

    I know for me I did it just to have the option. I've never used it legitimately in 2 or 4hi. But I could see where one might want for some like a mud drag or playin in the dunes where you want as much traction while still being able to go faster than what 4lo offers. And just invade you don't know the 5mph thing is only for engaging and disengaging the locker once it's locked you can go as fast as you want

    That explains it! For some reason I thought you had to stay under 5 mph (or 10mph if you haven't done the mod and have to stay in 4 lo to use the locker).

    Here's a scenario: You blow out your last cv axle on the trail, and now, don't want to engage 4wd, but still could use the locker to help get you to pavement.

    I'm gonna do this mod. Thanks.

    It's nice to just be locked in rear cruising thru mild sand or going thru at a faster clip, those situations where open diff isn't enough & 4wheel isn't needed...

    When you're at a stop light and a ricer civic pulls up and revs his rice rocket and your supercharger is running excellently so you lock in because when you drop the clutch in boost one of your 285 mud terrains will spin. :)

    Instead, you'll light both tires up, scaring the crap (literally?) out of said ricer as you leave two smoking black patches for the next 30 feet before you jump ahead and leave him (or her?) wondering how the hell they just got shown up by a mud-covered truck? (Because... of course you'd be on your way back from a trip.. why not? :D)

    Don't feel bad.. I couldn't get the mudders I had to spin worth a damn on pavement, not enough torque to move 'em with my little 3.4 Taco that I had. I tore the hell out of the stock tires though. :D :eek:

    It does launch hard as hell, I used to get nasty axle twist with the stock springs.. that stopped when I got new leafs.. Probably didn't help that the stock springs were shot to hell.

    Hey so i started doing the mod, but when i took off the panel i found this. i was missing that box that you have on your tacoma (box covered with black foam). Anybody know what its for?
    it was just a loose connector

    P.s. i already did the grey mod, but i want to know what that box is for?

    SAND. SAND EVERYWHERE!! It think the box controls the transfer case actuator. So if yours is a J shift that could be why you don't have it. That's the Only thing I can think of.

    Did this today. The only trouble was getting the white harness to unplug from the control box. I don't know why it fought so hard, but it wanted to just pull all the innards out with it. Other than that, 10 minute mod.
