Is it possible to just cut the wire far enough away from the connector that you directly ground the same grey wire and wont need to use another piece of wire to connect to the grey wire and then ground? Sorry i would look but i dont have a taco YET

I have a 12 pin on mine and had different colors on some of the pins. The pic you posted is a little blurred for me but if the third from the right and the top row is a gray wire and the second from the right is a green with white trace, you would cut the wire 3 from the right in the top row as we look at your pic...

Also note this wire was a gray on my truck and it was a smaller size than the others on the plug. Least on mine it was. But it looks gray and I think the second one from the right looks green with a white trace. So I pretty sure your third wire from the right on the top row will be the one man.

What else is there to say. After I got around all the old alarm system BS, it took longer to take it apart than to do the mod. Thanks for this. Highly recommended.

I have an 02' v6 double cab 4wd SR5. Will the grey wire work on my truck? Also, will I still be able to shift into 4 hi while moving?

I have the '03 DC 4x4 and it has the locker. It is marked as an SR5 with the TRD package. I haven't done the mod yet but it should work fine.

If you not have a E-locker then the gray wire mod does not apply. But if you do then yes, you will still be able to shift into 4 hi while moving. This doesn't effect that.

If you have a factory locker you will have that button.

Yes, if you have the E-locker (with switch as shown in the photo above).

Yes, the behaviour does not change with the grey-wire going between 2-Hi and 4-Hi while moving.

Finally got this done. My wire colors are a little different than the OP shows. Also if you cut the grey wire 4 or 5 inches from the connector you can ground it back to the same screw that the 4WD controller is connected to without needing a separate wire.

I know you have to be stopped or below 5mph before it will engage...

You have the same truck as mine so maybe you need to have it checked.
