No, it's under the kick panel on the drivers side. When you pull the cover off to get to the mod, these are what I found

The OP’s pic of the finished work isn’t easily discernible, so I thought I’d post a couple. I’m sure there’s probably some good pics in this thread from other users, but here’s what I did. Like most everyone has stated, only basic skills are needed to do this work, by the way. It took me about 20 minutes all in, which included running an extension chord a couple times(once because I was dumb and thought it would reach and the second was to get it right) for the heat gun.

Hi everyone. I haven’t been on any Tacoma forum for a few years. Life just gets in the way. To keep this short, a few years ago I bought a 2002 4 door V-6 4x4 Tacoma. I hated and sold my new 2017 after 6 months and only 1500 miles, no power and constant shifting. Anyway I think my old 2002 has something similar to this mod. The locker light on the instrument panel blinks instead of staying on no matter if I’m in 2wd, 4wd high or 4wd lo if I push the button. I’ve checked this in 2wd with the locker button pushed and the light blinking and both rear wheels will turn. Does anyone know why the light only blinks? Was there another mod to turn on the locker in any gear? Or maybe the previous owner did something different to make the locker engage in any gear. I’m only the 2nd owner of this old, near 290,000 mile truck. I believe the engine was rebuilt at some point. I was told the gears were changed because previous owner was running 35” tires on 20” wheels. But I didn’t know or remember to ask about other mods. I switched back to 15” Alcoa 90’s style wheels with 31” tires. Trucks runs perfectly! I haul 275 gallons of water up a steep 2 mile rd from 2000 feet elevation to 3200 feet. A lot of weight for that little truck, but thanks to the lower gearing, it does it with ease. Thanks for any comments, advice or questions. Yeah, sorry I’m commenting on a very old post. But it seems to keep going. IMG_2901.jpg IMG_2944.jpg

Try engaging the locker and then drive forward a few feet and then back a few feet. Do it a couple few times. It should engage. If it doesn’t, try and listen for the locker actuating. You should be able to hear it right after you hit the locker button.

I’m sure it engage, I can hear it click in the rear and both rear wheels do turn. But the light just blinks, it never stays on solid. As I mentioned I bought this truck with 290,000 miles, from the kid of the original owner, so not sure exactly what’s been done to it. I guess as long as it kicks in, I’m not going to worry too much. I had a 1998 for a few month and it dud the same thing. I got rid of it, just too many problems. But the 02 seems to be running great after I put in a new mass sit flow sensor. I just haven’t had the time to check out everything. Although I’ve owned it nearly 2 years now, it still just runs and runs. The A/C belt broke which I’m replacing this weekend. The previous owner did tell me timing belt was changed about 80,000 miles ago. I’m waiting on that until it gets closer to 90,000 or maybe even 100,000 miles. It’s been running so good with the 290,000, I almost hate to do anything to it. It’s definitely a third, not used often vehicle in Hawaii that doesn’t get a lot of miles put on it. But I still want to keep it maintained. Here it’s very hard to find any generation Tacoma that’s not all smashed up or missing a tailgate or whatever. Hawaii is rated as the state with the worst drivers! LOL it definitely shows. Half the vehicles here have been wrecked or have mis- matched doors, hoods, or beds. I was lucky to find this at $10,000. Tacoma’s are the most popular truck here and new ones go way over sticker. I’d be better off going back home to So Cal and buying a new one, and shipping it over. Lol Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

So I don’t have time to read the entire thread, I just did the mod and it works in 2wd but only will engage the locker when under 5mph. Is this normal?
