While I think it's unlikely, unless the power steering is electric (and it's not on this truck), various in the combustion cycle (which the CKP certainly does effect) could effect the power steering, so I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand. I would definitely track it. Sometimes data is just that, data, but sometimes it's the piece of the puzzle that you need to figure something out.

It seems most your issues were due to a faulty cps. My experience with these components is that in spite of what Toyota says, they rarely if ever set the mil light on and that goes for all auto makers lol!

But I'm thinking that if your previous miles were put on with faulty a cps, the spark plugs and or cats maybe starting to clear themselves and if so it should get better. I would pull the easy plugs on the drivers side and have a look as they can often tell a lot about what goes on in that combustion chamber. Too bad the drivers side are too hard to pull because it could be just one plug has a little more deposits.

Glad things are better for you though, and if you keep your tank between 1/4 and 3/4 full the mileage will be better than when full.

    Cheers!

I haven't mentioned it before because you observed a correlation with octane; have you checked the power steering switch?

The service manual states, "intermittent" problems with the CKP will not throw a MIL.

I believe the MIL will not come on unless there is a minimum deviation for a certain time on 2 consecutive trips.

Gotcha. Just speaking from my own experience with a CKP/CPS failure in my old Nissan Sentra it never effected ride or steering characteristics. It definitely sounds like there is something going on beyond just the bad CKP sensor with your truck. Sorry to see you are having such difficulties and I definitely understand wanting to trade out of it ASAP.

Nope - do tell (or point me to a page in the service manual if easier) ;)

And I can still tell a difference w/ octanes in general. I'll be willing to bet it will soften up after another full tank of 89 but still will be intermittent. in any case I'm interested in what you have to say about the switch.

    Switch starts on 2,999.
Related tidbit on page 4,866(PS Feedback Value); but that has to do with idle speed control

Yes, I track it but it's always 0% even when specific cylinder misfires are recorded.

Thanks - I've added Power Steering SW to my logs from here which should give me an indication of when it's on / off and will read through this and do a bit of inspection when I get a chance. It does indeed feel like sometimes its super pressurized - like I can't feel anything from the road and can drive the truck effortlessly with a single finger. Other times I really need to have both hands fully on the wheel when it's heavy which just amplifies the road feel which becomes a lot harsher in those conditions as well.

Maybe CRCs MAF cleaner? If it doesn't leave any residue on the little copper MAF wire I don't think it would leave anything on a CPS

My dealer quoted 3-4 weeks just to get the part. Can anyone comment on how long they've had to wait?

Why would you pay for it when Toyota is providing it?

Ya, agreed, no wait time yet. But I'm in Canada, so probably come last.
