My CPS was bad. I had it replaced under recall. No noticeable difference in mileage, power, shifting, idle, etc. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

    Still stumbles, surges, misfires, etc.

Changing it did not do anything for me. I was not on the recall. I changed it to see if it would help the stumbles but like Smitty said, it didn't do crap compared to the factory one. I have the stumbles. OV tune helped it some but alot of it is still there.

Mine got done. Took them about two months to get the part in.

Truck seems... better. Idle doesn't sound weird anymore, no more surging when engine braking.. Maybe it's psycosomatic. I'll let you know in 5k miles (she's been burning a ton of oil, 2-3 quarts per 5000), if that stops I'll be a happy camper.

Nope. Been doing that since the factory. 2x oil consumption tests, 'normal characteristic of the engine' my ass.

They replaced mine after 5,000 miles after it failed and left my wife stranded. They replaced it almost 2 years ago after having to tow it to the dealer. Now they just replaced it AGAIN after the recall came out. I just wonder what they put in it for the first replacement. A good one? A different one? It ran fine after the first replacement. But they felt the need to do it again, I guess. What's going on with Toyota?

I've been pondering how to address DMV renewal in California, for those of us that replaced this darn CPS ourselves.
I for one tossed the TSB notice since I'd already replaced the CPS, with good results by the way.
Will the dealer give issue the certificate after inspecting for the right part? or will they replace it anyway??

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
OP, and other substantive contributors to this thread, minus those in time out of course........ Do you have any updates on your current situation with your trucks and how they are doing, updates on the MPG issues as well?

Since this thread is fairly lengthy, would you please consider summarizing your individual experiences, and then giving us all an update? Seems a shame to have such useful threads die out. Thanks.

If you are burning that much oil, you better have it checked out.....

Are you sure it's not leaking" that oil...?? IE: timing belt cover is a suspect...!!

I’m not on the list. Gonna install the new one this weekend.

I saw a PDF on the instructions for the swap out. Only thing missing from the OP on this thread is to apply a light coating of motor oil to the o-ring on the new sensor before installing.

I’m doing this to see if it will drop my misfire count. I average 8.5 with highs in the 20+ range and lows in the 1-3 range. Seems like the more I drive the truck, the less it misfires. I usually only drive the truck 1-3 times a week and usually short distances. The only real drive time is from our family outings, seasonal hunts, etc. The misfires are random across all cylinders, mostly occurring during the first few minutes of the drive cycle. They difinatley occur beyond those first few minutes, just not as much. Doesn’t matter the engine temp; if I want to cause a misfire, warm or cold, I can do it almost every time with heavy acceleration.

I’m not very hopeful that this is going to help, but it’s worth a shot. In the event that it doesn’t, I’ll be at a stand-still. You guys have any thoughts?

Just replaced my crankshaft position sensor last night and drove my truck. Got 1 misfire where I normally would have been between 10-15 (sometimes way higher, NEVER LOWER). I’m cautiosly optimistic, but my misfire worries may be behind me.

When I pulled the old sensor out, I noticed what looked like scratches on the face of the sensor. The part I replaced it with was part number 90919-05098. It’s the one with the “=“ stamped on it. The one I pulled out had the hash mark stamped on it.

Holly crap guys... I’m trying to stay cool about this in case this was an oddball drive cycle. The fact that I may be able to drive my truck without worrying about this any more is a game changer.

After logging more drive cycles, looks like my misfire count is back to usual. I’m going to give it a few hundred miles to try to settle in because I cleared learned values after replacemt. Also, when I pulled the old one out, I noticed scratches on the face of the sensor. Seems like the rotor is scraping it as it passes by.

So, my next step is going to be to pull the new sensor out after some miles to check for similar scratches.

Have you had issues since new? I don't like the look of the sensor you pulled out, hopefully when you check the replacement it doesn't look the same.

Is it possible you just got a bad tank of gas? It would be worthwhile to switch to a different station, one that sells high volume so their tanks turn over often.

I’ve had the problem for at least as long as I’ve been using OBD Fusion, which is about 6 months. Diffrant brand gas doesn’t help.

If the new sensor looks like the old one after I pull it out, it’ll seem to be one step closer to a diagnosis. The rotor is not supposed to touch the sensor. The thing is though, the repair would be very involved. While I’m still under warranty, I just get very concerned when big jobs get done because there’s so many opportunities for the mechanic to accidentally mess something else up.

The quick and dirty solution is to use a shim. It would be worth doing to see if the issue gets resolved.

Yup, thought about that. Might give it a try. I think a crush-gasket type of spacer should be adequate.

I might be adding an additional variable if I don’t get the spacing right though. I might give it a shot though. Will keep you posted.
