And you disagree? Really. Sorry you got a lemon. Posting on the internet won't fix it. My truck is fine, and if I had a problem then my energy would be used with the dealers and/or Toyota proper, not bad mouthing it on a forum.

Who's your dealer? I need to schedule my first service for the truck and dont feel like driving all the way back down to Chandler. I'm in North Phoenix but would drive a little bit for a decent service dept.

Weird, where are all the fan boys now? Diff howl issues = recall, CPS failures = recall, but those were just a few select trucks and a bunch of whiners...Glad toyota is stepping up to take care of this stuff.

It's not. Most of us that have howling differentials have never had a leak.

Yep, my diff shows ZERO signs of leaks/weeps, but has a faint howl at ~50mph. I probably would've never noticed the howl if it weren't for this site... usually got the radio on or something.

I haven't been on any of the recalls yet.

The diff recall is basically about Toyota trying to avoid responsibility for deaths/injury due to rear axle lockup. Like when it loses all of it's fluid and grenades. The diff "howl" that so many of us have has nothing to do with this recall. My diff is dry as a bone on the outside. Howls just the same.

Isn't the diff recall also about trying to prevent any problems like rear axle lock?

I had 2 diffs replaced on my 16 for the howl, I'm well aware.

Eh like I said before I'm pretty skeptical of the new part number. I think they likely corrected the sensor at the supplier level a while ago utilizing the old 89 PN, and now that the recall is coming out they defined it with the 98 PN to eliminate confusion and ensure they don't have to reimburse those who DIY'd.

If someone who had a CPS failure could post on here with your service report/part number that might clear things up.

Funny, this will be the third CPS in my truck, even though none have failed. Tacomaworld syndrome.

I'm sure it is, now that a few trucks have had this happen on the road.

I'd be curious to know as well. I haven't had any issues where I typically go, but options are good.

I too am skeptical that the new part # is truly a different sensor. But TW syndrome indeed... I just had to order one of the new part numbers to see what, if any physical differences there are. If none, I'll return it. My truck (with the "89" part number I installed about a month ago) is still running pretty damn good and maintaining ~20mpgs! ...but it has "relearned" some of it's bad habits like the slow accel stumble which i've just accepted at this point as part of it's desire to conserve fuel but who knows. Another $90 for the sake of curiosity. Will report back, if no one else has by then, what differences can be found between the two part numbers.

Something certainly doesn't sound right. From the recall:

"V. BACKGROUND The V6 engine crankshaft timing rotor in the involved vehicles may have been produced with excessive anti-corrosion coating. This could cause the crankshaft position sensor to malfunction. If this occurs, the vehicle may display a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), run roughly, misfire, or in some instances, stall. A stalling condition while driving at higher speeds may increase the risk of a crash"

If the problem was excessive anti-corrosion coating causing the CPK to malfunction (I assume from being flung onto it?), why would there be an actual different part needed? It seems a new CPK without anti-corrosion coating having been flung on to it would work fine (which is what bshammer0 is reporting) IF that was the actual problem. A newly designed part seems unnecessary based on the official explanation of the problem...but who knows.

The coating changes the sensors ability to read accurately. It's not a flinging issue it's a calibration issue to ensure it can read the cranks position accurately given the thickness of the coating.

Reread the explanation. The coating is thick in the crank timing rotor. NOT the sensor.

PS: CKP, not CPK. CranKshaft Position.

Yes, I think when some hear anti-corrosive coating they think of fluid film being sprayed all over a moving crank rotor which is unlikely. When I think of the type of coating that I would suspect is on this rotor, I think of something similar to the black coating on the frame but who knows.
