Just got my recall notice in the mail. Be careful if you DIY the install if you live in California. Cali has strict emissions laws. It says on the recall that the dealer must report to the DMV and provide you proof the recall was addressed or you can not register you car. I highly doubt any dealer would sign off on your diy install. I was going to DIY the install but after reading that on my recall notice I'm going to have to suck it up and waste a whole day at the dealer

SO just a little light Saturday night conversation... The DIR document states the following WRT the CKP:

"Some of the V6 engine crankshaft rotors may have been produced with an anti-corrosion coating
containing a greater concentration of silica, which increases the coating thickness. This may
cause potential interference with the crank position sensor during normal vehicle operation.
The interference could generate a static charge, which could result in a crank position sensor
    malfunction."

This is only a theory, as Toyota was not able to reproduce an abnormal CKP waveform during any of their lab/bench tests.

Anyway, we are also told in the DIR that a CKP of "improved design" is the remedy - presumably the "98". If static charge on the tip of the sensor is the culprit, what does "improved design" mean to you?
    - Some kind of shielding in the tip, or changes to the internal circuitry of the sensor.. or both.

What got me thinking about this was that when a truck stalls (and the CKP is the problem), the vehicle won't run properly until the sensor is replaced (in most cases I've seen). The thing about a static charge is it's not permanent - so if you were to pull the sensor (or just let the truck sit), presumably at some point the charge would dissipate or ground out. Assuming this, you could put the same sensor back in and be good to go until the same conditions arose again and the static charge accumulated on the tip - UNLESS - the static charge was actually causing damage/degradation of the internal components/circuitry. Hence the need for a new sensor.

Ok, so where am I going with all this? It's simply the long form of a thought that a few others have already brought forward - "89" model CKPs may only be a temporary fix to this issue. I could very well be wrong, and I hope I am - because a number of members have had the CKP replaced under warranty or did it themselves as a preventive measure. We know that the "98" was only introduced recently.

That's it, discuss if you like. Here's a basic schematic of the sensor/related ECM interface:

    CPS.jpg

Edit: I've been reading a little more on Hall Effect IC sensors (which is what this is), and the air gap between the sensor and the reluctor wheel on the crank has to be quite small - typically in 30 to 60 thou range. That may be why we couldn't eyeball any physical changes between the "89" and "98" sensors, particularly in length.

You've sworn you'd never buy another Tacoma... but have you sworn off Toyota completely? Sounds like you have a gem of a dealer there.

I'm in the recall list and got the new sensor installed at the dealer today. Noticed no change post install. They didn't clear the ECM learning so I cleared it at home with techstream. After I cleared the learning the truck drives much much better. The truck has ALWAYS driven better after clearing the learning. So I guess now I wait 1000-1500 miles and see if it reverts back. I F-ing hope shit sticks this time. So so so sick of this crap

On a side note, I saw a ton of tacomas setting in the service lot. Probably 20 or so. Glad I'm not on the diff recall. Those poor guys having to spend months in a rental

Its not a replace if fails they have to fix it if your vehicle is on the list, that service advisor is a fool.
This is what the NHTSA has on their site for my vin number which is affected by recall, its a safety risk
    1Recallsassociated with this VIN
    Jun 01,2017
    Manufacturer Recall NumberH0H
    NHTSA Recall Number17V356
    Recall StatusRecall Incomplete
SummaryThe V6 engine crankshaft timing rotor in the involved vehicles may have been produced with excessive anti-corrosion coating. This could cause the crankshaft position sensor to malfunction.

Safety RiskIf this condition occurs, the vehicle may display a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), run roughly, misfire, or in some instances, stall. A stalling condition while driving at higher speeds may increase the risk of a crash.

RemedyToyota is currently preparing the remedy for this condition. When the remedy becomes available, Toyota dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor with a new one of an improved design at no cost to customers.

    Manufacturer's Notes

If the manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall for your vehicle in a timely manner, please contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at: 1-888-327-4236 or TTY: 1-800-424-9153 or file an online complaint with NHTSA.

It's based on engine assembly date, not necessarily when your truck was built or the engine installed. Dates listed are who could have affected motors, that's why there might be gaps in the assembly dates of who'S affected and who isnt.

This thread is hilarious with the conjecture.

Thought it was off many in the "affected range" aren't on the recall list. Maybe this was in here somehere already but I didn't see it.
The documents on the NHTSA say that the affected engines were manufactured 9/15-11/30 2015. I guess my March build and most others that far into 2016 aren't using those 2015 engines anymore.
Also interesting for those who are wanting to buy the CPS themselves is the part they are using is from the Highlander, Sienna, and the Lexus RX.

Copied and pasted from NHTSA website below:

    1. Only vehicles equipped with a V6 engine (2GR-FKS) manufactured September 15, 2015 through November 30, 2015 are affected; other engines are not affected.

    2. (3) MY2016 and MY2017 Lexus RX vehicles produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc. and MY2017 Highlander and Sienna vehicles produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, Inc. are equipped with the same engine with the crankshaft rotor produced by the same supplier in the U.S. However, these vehicles are equipped with an updated crank position sensor which will be used as a remedy part for this recall campaign.

Replaced my "89" replacement sensor with the "98" new part yesterday - so far, no changes.

Only difference I could tell in the 2 sensors was the "98" had the two "-" marks instead of the textured circle.

Yup, disappointing. BUT, stumbles have been resolved in the OVTune which I've already bought/paid for....so good peace of mind knowing it wasn't the CKP and that I don't need to worry about bad parts on a good tune.

I can't tell for sure just yet - I need to finish up the other 1/4 tank I have of premium in the tank... I was in the mountains Saturday and the only gas station I was close to was out of regular and mid grade so I had to fill-up w/ premium. Need to finish it up before I can make a clear comparison.

What I can say is that on the way into the office I monitored 4 misfires - in the first 5 minutes or so of driving... But my fuel trims/O2 sensors/lamba are all where I'd expect them to be, cat runs cooler - of course - with premium, but my steering is heavier with premium (I know this makes no sense, but it is a fact with my truck and no one can seem to make sense of it...) Still bogged out in higher gears the delayed downshift. After I installed the "89" for several thousand miles I didn't feel the need to drive in anything other than D unless I was in the mountains and this AM I threw it into S for the first time in awhile.

I can't speak to whether those are connected until I go back to the BP 89 I've been running in the next couple of days and will then report back. It definitely does not drive like it did when I first installed the "89" sensor.... which seemed to be degrading over time as well. I'll report back later in the week.
