I recently got my tech license and have a mobile rig in each of my vehicles. Have a 8900 in my car and a 400xdr in my taco. I have a couple of cheap baofengs I can use when I'm walking around and for the price you can't beat it. I'm not into it as much as some, but I believe APRS has some fairly good functionality for us, especially when traveling alone. I believe if you're going through the trouble of setting up a mobile go ahead and put a good unit in the vehicle and play around with super cheap handhelds when walking around. You can move things from vehicle to vehicle fairly easily with two units I have, just a couple of extra cables and connectors and you're good. If you'd like specifics on how I set my vehicles up PM me and I'll tell you how I did it.

A handheld is always nice to have when working around the property, in the garage (if you don't have a set-up), etc. I'm currently looking at a new mobile radio and mounting options for my rig too. I left my Kenwood TM-281A in my 4Runner. There are a lot of online places that sell at reduced prices.
