I know that this doesn’t sounds like much but I have been working hard my whole life to go into a career in military, law enforcement or firefighting but I have learned after years of testing and waiting I am now not eligible to do any of the three. I’m honestly heartbroken, I feel more lost then I ever have before and I don’t know what to do with my life. I’ve been passionate about them for so long, I don’t know. I’m worried that I will never be able to have the same passion for anything again, and I can’t take it. I’m sorry, I know that this really doesn’t mean much but I don’t have anyone else to talk to

Why aren't you eligible, if you don't mind me asking?

I don't have the same situation as you but I am 29 and still don't know what to do with my life yet. It's hard and a scary world to just dive into something else or spend a lot of money on education for something you aren't sure you'd like. With the way the world is now, going to a trade school is a really good idea. Something I am considering doing right now.

Life throws you curves sometimes(I'm dealing with one myself), but you have to adjust. Sounds like you want to help people? There's lots of opportunities to do that even if it's not your actual 'career'.

I volunteer at my local food pantry on some of my days off. Honestly, the natural high of doing something for others that one day a week makes up for the five days of 'paying the bills'. A wise person once told me 'your job doesn't define you- YOU define you'.

Even if you can't be a police officer, firefighter, soldier, etc you can still show them your support. A simple thumbs-up can make a difference! Your next calling will find you if you open yourself up to it. Good luck!

I am not eligible because I have depression and was recently put on medication for it. I have been wanting to try to get into welding but I just want that passion you know?

Thank you so much. I definitely want to try to volunteer somewhere! I like the “YOU define you” I’ll definitely work on trying to embrace that. Thank you

Strange. I am thinking about doing welding as well! Been looking into local trade schools. If you put the work in and chase the certs to make more money, you could make a good career of it.

what branch were you trying for? I know Air Force is most restrictive.

Sometimes one opportunity closes and others open. Hope things work out for you, but can vent here...if you need professional counseling seek that as well. Nothing shameful or wrong with that. Good luck.

I know plenty of people who actually got what they want and end up making a career change. Things happen for reasons and there are so many things that you can do outside of those career choices. hope you find the right path bud!

Yeah as mentioned having a problem that you are dealing with properly or dealt with properly is evidence of good judgement and self awareness, not a DQ for most jobs. I've worked PD and Fire jobs with people who were receiving psych care for various ailments and the specific folks I remember have successful careers in public safety.

If that is what you truly want to do, get off the meds. Have you Dr switch them or go a more natural route.

This is one of the problems with our society. Everyone tells you to talk about it and get help, but if you admit you’re a drunk or suicidal or whatever it’s now on your record and you can’t get jobs, life insurance, gun license. It goes on and on.

    Fun fact about the military:

Unless you are a super square, to the extent that you feel you need to NOT omit the information, they would be none the wiser.

Matter of fact, the recruiter had me refill out my med history forms before going meps because some broken bone surgeries I had as a kid was disqualifying. Refill out my forms with the “correct answers.”

They don’t want to know. They don’t care. Even still on top of that, there are waivers for everything. The question is do you think it will help your state of mind prairie dogging a turd, eating moldy food out of a bag standing in chest deep water behind a m2 staring a fucking nothing for 6 fucking days because someone in the platoon helicoptered the first sergeants daughter during morning PT…

And, another way of looking at it is. My family has ALL been in the military and all of them have been screwed in one way or the other. PLUS, this keeps you from being drafted in case WW3 breaks out. My brother was also a policeman and that job SUCKS with little to no pay.
I don't know you but if you are willing to join the army then you are willing to work. Fill out app for every drilling company and make $80k a year for 6 months worth of work. Oilfield isn't like it used to be, a lot safer and not near as hard.
