Toyota fixed a lot of the early 2gr issues with the 2018 model year, but I'd stick with a 2019 or above for 3rd gen if OP is looking for one. Unless you're talking about the 2tr then who cares about the year it'll run till the end of time.

Speaking of 2tr: that's what you should really be comparing the detuned 2.4L to, as that's the engine it replaces.

228 hp and more torque is a big step up from 160 hp and ft-lbs.

Obviously nothing will come close to the outgoing 2.7L, but the detuned 2.4 should be quite reliable from an engine stress standpoint, assuming it uses similar internals to the full power option.

I have not driven one, but you are correct on everything you stated. I would either get a new SR5, or look for a 2022 or 2023.

I haven't seen an SR anywhere. Last month dealers were discounting the SR5s on the lot.
    Two things worth considering.

Last year of the generation seems to hold it's value best, feel fresher, and original poster sounds like a new vehicle guy given the previous truck and potential move to a new rav4.

for the real "my money" it's a high milage 2nd gen ;)

Don’t forget the manual SR does NOT have the detuned engine. That’s the only way to go for that trim level IMHO.

I test drove a 2WD auto DCSB SR with basically no options and thought it was fine. A little choppy at the rear end, but it did not feel underpowered to me. Way better than a stock third gen in that regard.

This particular truck was sitting unsold for over a month and as I recall they were offering it for $33,810 excluding TT&L. Sticker was $35,629.

I am confused. Are we talking about the 4G Taco or the Chevy not having an intercooler/oil cooling?

I'm wrong. The SR has the intercooler but not the oil cooler.

I must be misunderstanding. The turbo on all versions are both air and oil cooled. You must be talking about a cooler for the oil system?

BTW, it only shares ~ 50 percent of parts with the similar Highlander engine. 50 percent more duty life on the different parts.

Just pointing out his mistake. Nothing related to our discussion. Just an FYI.

There are hundreds of SR5s sitting on the lots in my area, and dealers are getting really competitive. SRs are few and not really discounted. I suspect that you will be able to get into an SR5 for what you are considering buying the SR for. It's not really that unusual of a situation. We bought my wife a Crosstrek this spring. Premiums were less expensive than Base models due to steep discounts on the common Premiums and no Base inventory.

What’s the point of putting a turbo on a motor if you’re going to delete the intercooler and detune the motor. Might as well just have a naturally aspirated motor and less things to go wrong.

As I stated above, I was wrong. They all have the intercooler. The SR doesn't have an oil cooler.
