Just looked it up. Ideal transmission fluid temps are around 175-200°. Breakdown begins at about 225°.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Just like the mud flap, left side bed cubby, front bed rail, updated but poorly accessible console ...

Anyone want to use their truck for mock up to get a factory parts list/kit set up for members?

Mojave dessert area now or in a few months Tennessee?

Hello everyone. I've got a 2020 limited and am getting a trailer so I'm on this forum doing some research. I bought the towing package truck but have learned it doesn't include a separate transmission oil cooler. I'm inferring from this thread that Toyota is using a part of the main radiator to cool transmission oil? Can someone more knowledgable than myself confirm that please? Thanks!

to all adding their own cooler, just make sure that if in the future you have cooling system or tranny problems, make sure the cooler you added is easily reversable so you can remove it and bring the truck to 100% factory stock before you bring it to the dealer for warranty work for those issues. I know some will claim thats cheating and immoral, but I wouldnt care and would still do it if it were mine.

Just an FYI. Back when I was younger and used to beat the s**t out of my trucks, I made coolers out of anything with tubes and fins. Refrigeration coils worked good. Make a bracket and you're good to go. Never had a problem.

Ok. My 2015 Tacoma died. Got a 2021... not my best decision but it done.

I tow a small trailer, 3500#. Pulled scangauge 2 out of old truck and put in new one and updated new codes for tranny fluid.

First thing I noticed was there did not appear to be a tranny cooler!!! Clearly I thought it must be somewhere new.

Now I see that is not the case, though there does seem to be an oil cooler near the base of the radiator.

The temps not towing on level ground, on a cool day, run about 180-185. Towing they run 195’ish. Going uphill one will climb (slower than in old truck) to 210-220 fairly easily and ease back down. While the other temp stays fairly constant at 195.

Originally I figured I’d just change fluid every 50k miles.
However, after climbing a small hill, 2000’ but fairly steep, with trailer in tow the temps on the TC soared up to 260 and the base was at 225. Water temp was fine at 195.

So I will be adding a cooler.
Out west I went up many very long 5-7 grades and never got over 220. And general towing was about the same as not towing. 170-180.

If deleting the trans cooler was a cost cutting move, why did Toyota decide to now make tow packages standard @ 2017 ? It was previously optional for several lower trim levels. That makes no sense.

I just opened the hood and at the bottom of the radiator there seems to be a oil cooler or something.. it’s black with fins and has two lines coming in and a single line on the other side .. is this a oil cooler or a trans cooler

No so much a savings in material, but in labor and factory line management.
