Has anyone replaced motor for their Tacoma?

    Hey all,
I recently took my 2005 Toyota Tacoma to a shop to have the engine replaced with a remanufactured engine with a 3 year/unlimited mile warranty. I probably paid too much, but I do trust this shop because they specialize in engine installation. I'm expecting it back later this week.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience replacing their motor. How did your Tacoma drive after? Was it worth it? Any regrets? Any problems after the replaced motor? How much did you pay out of pocket for the work?

Thanks in advance for your replies. I tried to google some testimonials or experiences but I couldn't find anything relevant to Tacos.
    Have a great day,
    coloradomountaintacoma

I'm glad you don't have any problems with yours 4X4Taco09. Thank you for your response. I'll update everyone with my experience once I have my truck back. I took a amatuer photo of my engine before I took it there and I'll take a photo of it once I see it.

Why did you replace the engine and how much did it cost you?

    • I replaced the engine because two shops both said the engine was done. The first shop wasn't specific but did say the engine wasn't holding pressure. The second shop said from an initial diagnostic that the engine was low on oil and this caused something to break and it was "metal on metal". I thought it was strange they said the oil was low since the oil guage never appeared on my dash. Anyways, before all this the engine was knocking really bad, which is why I took it to these shops.
    • The repair cost was:
    $1695 for the install
$4895 for factory reman engine w/ 3 yr unlimited mile warranty
    (plus parts and tax)

    • 2005 Toyota Tacoma with extended bed (4WD 6 cyl, 4.0 L, Manual 6 speed) with 124,000 miles.

    • I'm not sure what the failure was specifically but the mechanics said something about a piston. I'm not in the least mechanically savvy, so I can't be super precise and specific)
    • Look at the above reply for cost.
    Thanks for your reply.

I would love to swap out the engine for an LS1 or LS2 if it would fit, I would do it tomorrow...

Sorry fo your misfortune OP. Wish you the best with the replacement. You'd be doing us a favor if you could provide a little more info.

    Are you the original owner?

How often did you change the oil and which type of oil did you use?

Since you do trust the shop and the engine is warranted, I hope you get many more years and miles out of that low mileage 2005. :)

To be curious on a couple points.
    1. Were you the original owner and do you think poor maintenance/driving habits caused the issue?
    2. At $6.5K we are likely on the edge of scrap it or repair it. Did you think about starting fresh with a newer model?

    Good luck!
