They apparently just switched my tires and hit the TPMS sensor and told me to go for a drive. It was picking up the sensor but not displaying any tires. Dropped the spare out of the truck so it wouldn’t be a conflicting sensor and it started to work.

I’m not 100% sold they didn’t recode the TPMS, but I have no reason to disbelieve them either.
Well it is not reading the spare tire as I took the spare completely out of the truck and drove around. Also deflated the tired one by one to verify them.

The shop could be full of shit and programmed them in, they told me all I needed to do was hit the TPMS reset button and it will read the tires after a bit above automatically. Whether that is true or not I have no idea. Just saying that is all that was done on mine (or I was told was done)

Took 3 weeks before my TPMS light came on with my winter tires & steel rims (without sensors).

My Honda CRV used to do the same thing, so I figured it would eventually happen.

unless I am misunderstanding you're saying the tire shop put a sensor into your 5th wheel and then said they didn't need to do any coding and it works fine by just pressing TPMS reset.

If so that can't be unless they cloned a sensor and I haven't heard of anyone being able to do so yet for the 3rd gen.
That said it takes a while for them to sometimes realize there is no sensor there.

When I put my winters on it took a few days before the TPMS light came on. And it only came on once I got on the highway and went over 60mph.

YEah they put in a new sensor in the spare. Rotated the tires, and hit the TPMS reset button. Anyways, that’s what they told me, maybe they recoded it as well. No idea, I know when I brought it back in they plugged it in to verify it was reading the right code for the tires and the guy also said they never coded it in.

maybe I was lucky. No idea.

I’m leaning more towards what your saying and they are full of shit. I’m planning on getting my own coding tool to reset the TPMS. WIll see though, I think I need to pick up windows laptop though to do that, unless one works with a Mac.

Well not sure if coders work for all 5.
But in tech stream there's a 5th spot to access

Reviving this thread, as my situation is a bit different.
6" lift, thus 35/12.5 rubber. I'm wanting to pick up a full sized, matching 5th/spare and perform a 5 tire rotation. However, and this is where I cannot quite find confirmation, is that I don't plan on carrying the full size 5th wheel/tire combo all the time so I'll only have 4 sensors on the truck, but I want to register 5 sensors to the truck.

Can anyone confirm that a 2017 Tacoma can handle 5 sensors registered in TechStream?

Also, can anyone confirm that the factory spare DOES NOT have a TPMS?

I saw when they coded mine, yes the 2017 has 5 TPMS inputs. But they could not confirm whether or not they would be able to be rotated in.

One would think, logically, that if the truck is registered for 5 TPMS then it would be able to receive the frequency from the speed sensor, etc once moving.

Any idea on the the factory spare having a TPMS in it?

Even IF you could get the ECM to read the "extra" sensor, where would it display..???? The 3rd gens only have room for the 4 on the display....IE: NO spare there in the higher end models that have the tire location shown..

So that's the thing, I'm not wanting to have the truck show/display 5 sensors...just acknowledge which 4 of the 5 are on the truck.
Like I said, I won't have the full size spare in the truck at all times, mostly road trips and any trail rides...basically when I'm not close to home and the chances of being stranded due to a flat are increased.

My hope is to program the 5th TPMS, and that the truck will "learn" via a TPMS reset via button push on the dash after a rotation when one wheel/tire goes off the truck and the 5th comes on.

I spose it will read the 4 of them that are installed, if the spare is put away in the garage. But the spare may "confuse" the ECM when put in the bed of the truck, or maybe not...!! By what I'm reading, the reset button would have to be pushed to allow the spare to "talk" to the ECM. You may be OK doing what you say..!

    Might work.

from what I understand it would just monitor it so if it went flat it would throw the TPMS light but you would have to check it.

My concern isn't having it show on the dash though when its in spare location. I want to be able to rotate that 5th tire in so I can wear all 5 evenly.

Assuming I can get the 5th TPMS in the TechStream, then we gonna find out if it'll work!
Ordered my 5th TPMS today. Should have it Wednesday.

    let us know please.

I saw when the dealer did mine and it had a 5th sensor spot but no one could confirm whether or not I can put a 5th one in the spare and rotate it in.

You'd think being 'master technicians' they'd know these things.

On my first service visit that "master tech" neglected to do my tire rotation. I'll just tell them no thanks on the free rotations from now on, since I have the means to do so at the house now. I'm am slightly regretting not spending another $30 on the rapid lift floor jack now...oh well...arm work out!

I am very interested in this subject.

I purchased a full size spare because in my early days of TW'ing, I read that the 5th tire could be added.

The local tire shop told me they could provide the new tire/ rim and TPMS and set it up. When I arrived to get the work done, I told the tech to install the new 5th tire on the truck and take the existing tire and put it in the spare location- he was slightly hesitant to comply, and three hours later admitted he couldn't get it working.

I wanted the 5th tire anyway, and for my 5k service, I talked to the tech about it, he said it would be possible, and I ordered a TPMS from the dealership.

When I went in to have it set up, another tech explained it could not be done and refunded the money.

So I have been doing 4 tire rotation awaiting to see if anybody can figure a hack.

    Fwiw.
