SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A pickup truck hurtled off a Syracuse highway, drove off the road and headed straight for the bus.

Inside the Centro bus, a woman spotted the truck and shouted. Then, a split second later, the truck smashed through the side of the parked bus -- shattering glass and throwing passengers into the air.

Video surveillance from inside and outside the bus shows the truck striking and getting stuck inside the bus around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. Eight people were injured in the Park Street crash not far from Destiny USA, said the Syracuse Police Department.

Centro released the video after Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard filed a Freedom of Information Law request.

Each camera shows a different angle of the accident.

In one angle, a camera outside the bus shows the pickup truck exiting Interstate 81 north at Park Street.

Neil Brownell, the driver of the truck, saw a line of stopped vehicles on the off-ramp and tried to brake, said Sgt. David Sackett, a police spokesman. Brownell mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes -- sending his truck off the road and into the bus, he said.

One video frame captured the truck knocking over a road sign before stricking the side of the bus. The bus was stopped on Park Street at the Farmers Market Place traffic light.

In another frame, a passenger put her hands on her face after spotting the oncoming truck. A man sitting across the aisle from her turned around and started to stand just before the collision.

The man was thrown into the air. He struck the other side of the bus before falling to the floor.

The camera shows a small fire starting and quickly burning out inside the bus.

Another camera shows two passengers toward the back of the bus are lifted up and tossed aisde by the impact.

Other camera angles show frightened passengers hurrying to get off the bus.

Eight people were transported to hospitals after the crash.

Passenger Herbert Barry, 60, suffered the most serious injury, Sackett said. Barry suffered a broken leg and a hand injury, he said.

Brownell, 82, of West Monroe, was not familiar with the Syracuse area, Sackett said. The pickup truck driver was ticketed for failure to reduce speed on a curve and failure to keep right on a highway, he said.

Audio from the cameras captures the boom of the crash. After the bus-shaking collision, the bus driver, Daphne Ross-Powell, 54, of Syracuse, tried to soothe her passengers.

"Alright? Is everybody alright?" she said. "Hold on. Hold on."

82? Someone shouldn't have been driving if he can't tell the gas from the brake!

You haven't been to Florida have you? You have to mix them up to keep your license there. It's literally a daily thing when they drive into stores.
