So, went to the gas station and put gas in my truck just like I've done a hundred times before except this time when I went to shut the door it warped and collided with the side of my truck scratching it at the top. I didn't want to mess with it at the gas station so I had to drive home with my fuel door open like an idiot. Once I got home and had a chance to look it over I could not figure out for the life of me why my fuel door was Now crazy warped for no reason. It would not shut. I took toit toyota body shop and he told me that the hinge is very flimsy and that because I live on a gravel road, the hinge got full of dust and seized up. When I shut the door with the hinge not moving freely it bent it.
Moral of the story, put some oil on your hinges.
They area deciding if it is be under warranty or not .$103 if not.

If you are still under the bumper to bumper warranty of 30k then it should be covered. I was stupid and didnt get this situation looked at till later and it got so bad I could barely open the door. Scratched the shit out of the door edge too. Took i in and they wouldnt do anything for me. It was like $180 for a new fuel door assembly and like $200 to paint t and some the xtra for installation. Total estimate was over $500 for me. I went home and bent/straightened the hinges out with vice grips and lubed them. Been good for 3+ years. No rust on the door yet either which is impressive considering my location. Must not have scratched through the primer.

$100 to replace and paint the fuel door is a steal.

The shame and embarrassment of driving with your fuel door open is something no amount of money can resolve.

OP - I'd use this opportunity to get a locking fuel door if warranty won't cover it. It probably would just slow someone down hell bent on getting at the gas, but it would give enough time to possibly defend your property.

For some reason Toyota doesn't like anything locking and gas cap related. I'm a little fixated about locking my stuff up right now. o_O

I think the gas filler doors are spring loaded, sounds like that spring got hung up and buckled it.

I wont ever put a locking fuel door or cap on mine again- it was not worth the cost of repairing my gas tank on my 1st gen when the fuel thieves drilled my tank to get a couple gallons of gas because I had a locking cap on it. They tried drilling the locked cap out first, then went for the tank.

The doors on the '18's are flimsy as hell. Now you've got me thinking I should go complain about it now so there is a record. And maybe they'll even do something about it.

    Nice pillow.

In Vancouver BC that would be about $1000 Canadian. Which is about $113.88 American

I would be careful using oil or grease on the hinges. That might attract even more dust. Occasional cleaning with a soft brush may be best.

    Looks like a purse maybe?

Either way, sucks about the unnecessary hassle with such a simple part. Hope it all gets fixed.

Well, it's not like I'd go down special, though they are about a block from the GF's place. I'll bring it up when I get service.

I don’t blame u. Just to b on the safe side. I had the two screw ends that u can c when u open up the fuel door start getting a little surface rust and I mentioned it.

I just WD-40’d them bad boys, but I still mentioned it to the service dipscrews. They don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground, but they can at least enter stuff into the computer. Lol.

I had this happen on my 2005. Cost me about $150 to get it replaced.
