If you have any bike/motorcycle chain lubricant in aerosol spray, that works well to. Even fluid film is pretty good.

This fuel door failure just happened to me. No issues. Filled up gas, go to close it, and it makes a weird pop noise and the top portion sticks out while it's latched shut. 2017, 70,xxx miles. How does Toyota mess up the freakin' fuel door?

I just relubed mine today with white lithium, do it every time I wax. That hinge is so flimsy it looks like it’s on a children’s toy. Definitely a market for something after market to solve this.

I had this issue on my 2018, was able to get it back into position a few times but would always warp back and eventually needed replacement. Was told this is common in Tacoma and Sienna vehicles in current gen

This just happened to me yesterday on my 2017. Apparently the siennas have a repair program for this.

I think something about the design isdifferent on my 22 compared to my 18, just not sure exactly what is different but looks slightly different than I remember, can you confirm?

Well, just went to get gas and for no apparent reason since the last time I gassed up last week the door was screwed up and misaligned. Would not close without putting downward pressure while closing. Also creaks very loudly now. I messed with it a bit to see what the issue was. I ended up just pushing down on the door with a little force to get it to close. Still will slightly rub and creaks even louder now when closing. Thanks to this thread I'm not loosing my mind. From the looks of it, it sounds like this is a known issue on all gens. First thought was someone was trying to steal gas. A little disappointing that this is an issue after only 18 months old and 14K miles. At least the paint is still in tact. I will have to have a closer look at the hinge later in the week and ultimately use some grease of some sort. It's still under warranty so if it still an issue maybe a dealer visit.

So I went down to the parking garage and just applied some WD-40 and it is back to functioning just like day one. I suppose as others have pointed out, if that hinge binds up it causes the door to go out of line?

Anyhow, it doesn't make that annoying creaking sound anymore and it looks evenly placed when closed.

Here is the creaky gas door before applying WD-40 https://youtu.be/msWCs6fkDPs

Are your sure it is not the cap strap causing all the problems with the fuel door.It gets twisted and bent and causes problems. Here is a quick fix I done.Problem solved.

No. The hinge gets dry and when you close it, it binds and causes misalignment. BTDT GTTS WIO

I wouldn't use wd-40, after a few rain storms it'll wash out. Gotta use a lubricant more water resistant.

This issue happened on my old truck (2015). Kind of dissapointed to hear it is still an issue on 3rd gens - but I guess the fuel door design hasn't changed. Glad I saw this reminder to apply a little preventive lube now and then. I like the idea of putting bike chain lube in the hinge.

I agree with you cause just last week first time it happened as I was closing door it felt hard so I opened the door and sure enough the damn straps was stopping it from closing. Now if I would of had really pushed hard on it I probably would of bent the door. Shit happens.

I agree with @Metalskool and @zoo truck. As soon as I lubed the goofy designed hinge it released the binding and the door went back into alignment and closed normally. Thankfully I didn't bend it out of shape when I first tried to mitigate it.

We have had above average rain in the PNW since I've owned this truck. Also I have been guilty of washing this area regularly. The WD-40 freed it immediately. Works just like the day I brought it home.

However the WD-40 is a short term solution. I will look to having a better long term lube applied as others have suggested in this thread.

If you don't keep this maintained and lubed you risk damaging your paint in this area.

Fuel door issue popped up on me last night out of the blue. Talk about a head scratcher haha.
Went straight to the forum and it didn't disappoint. Read every post I could find, but this one was by far the most helpful.
Thanks @Woody79 for putting these photos up.

    Thank God for this forum.
You all saved me a ton of $$ (at least for now haha)
