Unfortunately, I need to unload my truck. Just got a company truck so it makes no sense to keep my tacoma. Looking for advice on what I should ask for it. It's a 2017 quicksand TRD OR 4x4 with the manual and tow package but without the tech package. Only has about 2500 miles. There is not a single dent, scratch, or rock chip to be found. Only thing I've done to it is add Firestone ride rite air bags, husky floor mats, sr5 grill, and SR black tail gate caps, and predator steps. I got a quote of 31k from the dealer I bought it from...is that a fair offer?

Push him to $32k-$33k if it is a straight buy (not a trade in)

Look at KBB, NADA, and true car. Then look at what others in your area are selling for, then base your price off that. If you're going for a trade in, knock off a couple grand of the private party price.

That's what I was hoping for but he was stuck on 31k. I'm not in a giant hurry to get rid of it but would like to get rid of it before the snow flies.

The value may go up a little the closer we get to Snow if you can afford to wait it out.

For what it's worth I got offered $30500 on my 16 OR on trade. If you are doing a private sale, look at CarGurus, KBB, dealerships near you to get a feel for the market. You'll likely have to undercut a dealer by a grand to get nibbles and another grand in negotiation room.

Edit: for the record I didn't accept the trade number. They are going for $34-35k everywhere else. It's stupid.

Tacomas on Craigslist here in Oregon are listed above the price of a new one. Don't know if people are stupid enough to bite or not but don't give it away!

Take it by Carmax and see what they'll offer.

They can sometimes give a very decent offer on popular vehicles.

A friend had to sell her Jeep Wrangler after her husband passed.

Carmax offered her $3K more than the dealer they purchased it from.

Why not sell the truck outright? Wouldn't you fair better?

    What @harrycary says.

Car Max buy out is a good bottom line number.

Over KBB, but a tad under what the vehicle would retail for from a dealer (cash purchase) should get you offers.

Not sure CL is the best medium, but it's certainly one.

I'd advertise it here as well. Your combination is not that easy to find (color, manual, tow, no tech) and might really attract an enthusiast.

If you are in a decent metro area, you're local paper is still a good place to consider.

They seem to be holding value pretty well. Actually a little amazing.

CarMax offered me $28k for mine. $4-6k less than market and $2-3k less than trade. (Around me)

Why sell it though if you can afford to keep it?

I wouldn't mod and wheel a company truck but i sure as hell would a 3rd Gen that could be a garage queen until it was time to go have fun. I say keep it and enjoy not putting the miles on it unless you want to, the hardest part about owning my LT'd Tacoma was putting bullshit highway miles while commuting in it.

Carmax is very hit or miss.
I got low balled 4,500 below the low end of blue book.
But other people have had good luck there.

I think their algorithm is weighted or at least favors certain vehicles. My brother in law got a pretty amazing price for an old beat up car and they had. That's why I even tried them out.

As far as OP goes, ultimately you'll have to make the determination if the deal is fair. How much you just spent on it vs what you are getting back for it would probably be a big factor in it. If you just dropped $40k and are getting $31k then no that's not even close.

If you paid $35 and are okay taking a $4k loss months after you bought it... Well that's on you.( Just pretend you are taking 40 $100 bills and lighting them on fire. )

Personally, if you are willing to put in the effort and take a tad more time, you could probably get damn near what you paid for it...at least within $2k.

$32 is MSRP. I'd take the $31K and run. My truck is exactly the same as yours and I bought it brand new for less than what they're offering you in trade.

Do you have the option say.... give the company truck back and have them give you a "vehicle stipend"? That way you can keep your taco:D
