Me too. Especially the thing where they go around taking time off and calling it a “sabbatical” without any sense of irony, as if they’re faculty at Hipsterville State. I’m sending them all to Texas to work long, lonestar hours in the shadow of the Silicon Prairie.

I haven't taken my Taco off road yet. I plan to. I'm a "novice," and I can say that I would definitely know that going up a 40% hill for more than a few seconds could cause problems with the engine. After reading this thread I understand that the truck would suck oil thru PCV, but without knowing that I would just think that 40% creates the possibility of the engine not being able to be oiled properly.
I can't imagine what this guy was thinking. Easier to blame others than to admit you did something stupid.

I was going to go with Moroso.... However, I like the way JLT’s bracket set up is designed. How easy is access to turning the bottom.... when it comes to emptying?
    BTW, thanks for the link.

True, it’s good to know your trucks capabilities.
But if you’re new and you watch Toyota adds on TV then you probably think your truck can do anything.
Steep hills, water are no big deal when you drive a Tacoma.

    hahahaahahha

This dude would not have written that article if he had been in the passenger seat as I took my 3rd gen on some steep ass trails here in CO. I've conquered plenty of hills now that are greater than the 30 degree angle our dash displays show. Engineer pass, Black bear pass, Imogene ass, Medano ass, Mosquito pass, China wall, and Metberry gulch have all been conquered by my truck, a 3rd gen tacoma with stock suspension and stock tires. I've also been in deeper water(Medano pass has a deep creek) than what he mentioned too. What a knucklehead.

    Only the best.
Im about to find out. Hoping my kit will be in soon. I tested a cheap universal fit on a few years ago and it worked perfectly. But the bowl stripped out on the 2nd empty so i put it back to stock. This is the first kit ive found built specifically for our trucks

How could the dealer check it out one day, find nothing wrong and then it hydro-locks and explodes a few weeks later?.......While towing a camper 100+ miles away?.....

Doubt we have the full story.......and he may-well be a douche......but I can’t see how the dealer/tech is right to say the engine failed due to hydro-locking. It’s not like it got towed to the dealer directly from the trail. Sounds like there’s a chance it could be the usual, warranty-denial-BS and the hipster may be right to try and shame Toyota into covering it with the only tools he has........

BTW- I’ve never checked mine, but isn’t there a drain hole in the bottom of the stock air box in case water gets in or does it just sit there like a bowl of soup until it dries out?

Okay, I only scanned the 6 pages quickly, I might have missed it; but... is there such a thing as "delayed" hydro-locking?
Liquid can NOT be compressed. Ever. The result for trying is immediate. If water was sucked up and moved into the compression area it would show up right then & there! Not days later at 70 mph, down a dry highway.

If the "immediate result" I spoke of was, say, a bent piston rod (feasible) and the engine kept running; then that cylinder would have faulty combustion and the computer would quickly recognize it and throw a code. Of course, that bent rod could fail days later at 70 mph - but the code (& poor performance) would've shown up first, right? He never mentions a code AFTER the dealer returned the truck to him.

So if some water (just not enough to get sucked in for combustion/compression) did ingress into the air filter box during the water crossing, how did it stay there during the hill climb?
If it did stay there, then why didn't the first dealer see it & remove it?
If they did clean it out, then what caused the hydro-lock days later?

So in my view, either it wasn't caused by water -or- the first dealer was grossly incompetent and they would've also had to disable the "check engine" light. What am I not seeing?

Edit: haha 2 min between my post & @Big tall dave .

Saw this thread last year https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/any-truth-to-this-article.611938/page-28

Wondered at the time if it was a true story. Still wondering if it's true. You have to try pretty hard to punch a hole in the block.
