It is no easy task to replace the head gaskets on the 1GR-FE. It is a labor intensive job.

Good chance the block is cracked if the head gaaket is only 3000km old. hard to say without seeing the engine and doing a leak down test.

$3000-4000 is the ballpark for almost all head jobs.

When you pull the heads they need to be sent out to a machine shop to be cleaned and pressure tested and have the valves / seals rebuilt. the machine work is on average $700-1100 If outsourced.

Factory heads are $1600-2000 if you opt for new.

Head gaskets and replacement studs are $200-300
Most studs are 'torque to yield' these days and not reusable.

Labor to tear down and labour to assemble. This is where half rhe cost of a head job comes from.

heads were sent to machine shop, machined and tested when gaskets were replaced. How could I tell if block is cracked? What do i look for? it was about $3,400 for labor and machine shop, i think almost $900 for parts, with guides and water pump, etc

Save yourself some money and buy a used motor out of a smashed truck. I'm betting local salvage yards would have one with less miles for similar price.

What really makes me mad is the average person would not have noticed!!! Literally this truck could probably run in this condition for years before catastrophic failure, then complain to dealership and they say "sorry, its been too long since work was done!"

That's what they hope for it seems
The average person that takes a vehicle to the dealership doesn't usually know a lot about their vehicle.

older thread, but found during research. Anyone that has this problem..was your check engine lights coming on? I haven't had anything....but some coolant leaking from the reservoir. I don't hear any gurgling either.

Leaking from the reservoir? Like do you see a leak or is the level just dropping for no apparent reason?

Popped my hood and found dried pink anti-freeze. Looks like it was dripping from my reservoir, hit the fan and it sprays it. So then I researched it like people do when they're sick using WebMD...and now I'm convinced I have this head gasket issue.

I don't have an gurgling sounds..I don't hear any misfires...I don't see any bubbling in my reservoir. And I have no check engine lights. Some folks on Tacoma world saying it could be an old worn out radiator cap...then others say it's my gasket. I did notice going up some hills under load it did (the needle) move from the cooler side to the other half of the Hot side...but then came down. I just had all of my idler and tensioner pulleys replaced, along with the Water pump and thermostat...with Denso and AISIN parts...(OEM). Not that cheap chinese stuff.

So should I be worried??? why am I losing coolant through the reservoir? It doesn't happen all the time. it's strange. I have an 06 Tacoma 4.0 with 207k miles.

what was your issue? I'm seeing a lot of people throwing the P0306 code because of the #6 cylinder and that's how they found it.

I also thought the same thing once I started researching it. I have a couple symptoms as well, but I'm using a scangauge to closely monitor my engine temps. That's helped put my mind at ease.

Was the pink liquid comming from the reseroir cap or overflow? Don't jump to conclusions. Any chance you have access to a bor scope or endoscope to pull a spark plig and look into a cylinder?

Where you live, is the climate more dry, like low humidity? Or high humidity?
