Head gasket screw up

    My friend is putting in a head gasket and used some fine sandpaper to clean the old gasket off the surface of the block (the head was done professionally). He then realized that was a bad idea. Anyone know what he should do to clean up his mess?

    If the block is aluminum you could have an issue but if it's an iron block don't worry.

    Since none of the cylinders are at Tdc, what about pouring some gas into the cylinders and swirling it around to pick up some dust and then vacuuming it out?

    Why gas? Just vacuum it out. Vacuum and then wipe it out with a towel and alcohol.

    Don't over complicate it. Gas may cause a fire, and will ruin your vac.

    A little dust won't kill it. gas won't get the dust out anyway. And, it would go into the oil and dilute it.

    ^^ This.

    Get a long snout air gun with as narrow a nozzle as you find and a shop vac. Cover up everything except the cylinder you're working on, and blow the air down the side of the piston, and have the hose adjacent to 'grab' anything the air blows up. Aside from that, I wouldn't worry too much, the metal particles are going to be VERY small and shouldn't do any damage.

    Just use compressed air or if you don't have a compressor use that canned air then wipe the area with acetone with a lint free cloth and you're good. Don't use gas or diesel on the top of the block surface.

    Thanks fellas. Its a 3rzfe so it has a iron block. Ill blow and suck till i cant blow and suck anymore and hope for the best. I dont think i hurt the surface im more worried about the dust. Wish i wasnt such a moron

    Dust will just burn and flow out the exhaust when you start the engine. Just get the bulk of it and any large particles out. Key thing is making sure you didn't ruin the mating surface, so focus on that.
