Well I got a job up in Alaska and will be living in Homer. Got a camper shell yesterday(it needs painted because I got it used). I have a bottle jack, shovel, fix a flat, batterybooster/compressor(can of fix a flat as well), gas can, and a few other odds and ends I will be throwing in. Hoping to find another tire/wheel as an extra spare as well. I will be driving there from Bakersfield, CA. I also need a block heater, which I am not sure they have around here with 106 degrees this past week!

Anyone have any recommendations or tips for their truck in Alaska. I have been to the area before, but only for a couple weeks.

    Thanks!
    Here's the truck:

Are you taking the ferry from Bellingham? You have a good list. I liked my weathertechs, wet okoles, and duratracs

I do plan on buying snow tires before winter(can't afford them on the initial move).
I do want weathertechs and seat covers.

I plan on driving the ALCAN highway.

I'm sure some of the locals will chime in. Hope you enjoy it! I just got back from a trip over in AK about a month ago.

To go with your block heater, an extremely high quality extension cord.

When I lived in ND, even the decent $20 ones would just crack and break when used at 20 below. This is what I ended up using, it's still in use 15 years later. k2-_9866cb62-02d4-4ca2-b091-0d3b50b8c1c5.v4.jpg

I wouldn't worry too much about winterizing until you get here and see what folks in Homer are doing.

Are you driving all the way up the Alcan to Tok and then back down through Glen Allen and Anchorage to get to Homer? There used to be a ferry from Haines to Seward that runs about once a week, would save you at least 1000 miles, maybe 1500.

Don't try to take a handgun through Canada without a pre-approved permit. Takes months. You used to be able to take rifles through, the Marlin 1895GG in 45-70 is a good solid choice that is a good first rifle to keep, not too expensive and will resale well up here if you let it go.

Thanks for the cord information! Never would have thought about that and probably would have bought a cheap one.

As for the rifle I will be taking an m1 garand, mini14, and a shot gun. I have already filled out the canada paperwork.

I will take a look at the ferry from Haines. The route you stated is the one I had planned on taking(about 3600 miles)

Just left the Thursday after a 12 day cruisetour on Princess cruise line. Really enjoyed it and actually had 4 days of seeing and touring around Denali. Good Luck but take anything you can think of as prices are way higher there. Gas was in the 2.50-2.60 range.

You don't really need a block heater in Homer.

That is actually what I was just looking at(average temps there) and you're right!
Plus I was going to have it installed in Anchorage. The dealership here said "we can figure out how to install it" and yeah no I built a car on my own.. I can figure it out too.
