I am trying to explain you (and others) that complains about 2gen are somewhat skewed especially when viewed in context of Ford forum.
if you have 100 Tacoma trucks and 100 Ford trucks. I am pretty sure many of those Tacomas travel over very rough terrain, and I dont mean curbs at 7 - eleven.
In theory those problems happen but they happen because Tacoma does little more then bring sand and gravel. So just sayign that 2gen trucks have xxxxx problems is misleading statement.

OP, it would probably be best if you just searched around in the 05+ section in this forum. You'll see all kinds of threads that will answer your questions. I have not heard anything about the rear end or engine mounts. but have heard lots on the wheel bearings, throwout bearings for the 6 spd, and something with the differential. Don't quote me on this stuff, but if you look you'll see.

Also, don't think since one or two guys admitting they have this problem, everyone has this problem. It just seems there were a bit more lemons on the 05+ side than the older ones.

    The OP has legit questions.

2005 was the 1st year of the 2nd gens. And there were bugs. I've read a number of posts on these very forums about bad motor mounts in the early '05s, as well as weak tailgates. Both issues were fixed in later runs / later years (in the case of the tailgates). As for bad bumpers ... they're all just crumple zones with little actual structure. Haven't heard about rear ends going out .. you talking about weak leaf springs? That problem remains, but an AAL will fix that.

So why bag on the guy for asking about the things he's heard? I wouldn't buy 1st year run on a new generation of ANYTHING. Am I a troll for saying that?

Seems to me there are a few people on here in need of a moderator's warning.

PS ... thanks to those with 2005s willing to chime in with rational, cool headed, objective responses to the OP.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
taco's towing capacity is 6500# WITH the factory installed package...bigger alternator, battery, oil cooler and tranny cooler, IIRC. not sure about the dealer installed ones, but i know it's less than 6500.

I'm taking one for the team when I say that my '05 w/ 20k has had the trans. replaced twice. The rear end once. Two bent tailgates Three broken motor mounts. Four squeaky blower motors. Four sets of sagging rear springs. Bumper completely fell off once. The radio hasn't worked in years. Windshield leaks. A/C has quit working nine times. and the plasitic bed has a huge hole in it. My truck has been in the shop a combined total of 3 years 8 months. I highly suggest you don't get one. Move along now.
