Heatgunning inside fender well plastic

Hey guys,

So I have Wildpeaks and I had some caster adjustments made to potentially avoid a CMC (for now) and I realize that I'm hitting the front plastic of the inside of the fender well and there is some rubbing in a compound wheel turn/compression situation like hitting a dip while turning, etc.

I can clearly see where I'm rubbing and it's a protrusion in the plastic of the fender well. Not sure why Toyota contour these things the way they do with nothing behind them. So what I was thinking of doing was putting either taking the plastic inner liner out and heat gunning it to soften the material and shape it so that it's not longer a protrusion. I just don't want to cut if I can avoid it.

Has anyone heat gun shaped their fender liner plastic? Curious for any tips before I do it. Here's a picture for reference.

 

I tried and failed miserably. It pushed and and stayed hntil it cooled then popped back out. Not sure i heated it enough and never tried again. .

 

Ah, okay, that's a great pro tip. I think I'll try to hold the shape until it fully cools and see if it pops.

 

In know its doable, I just couldnt be bithered retrying

Thanks man. Informative. I'm going to do it with the tires off and with a larger rounded shape so I can get in there and hold it with my leveraged weight.

I did it with the heat gun, but it's the pinchweld where I rub on.

 

Glad to help. You could use a bat or rolled newspaper/magazine for more surface area.

Yeah, so far no rubbing on the cab mount. I can see exactly where it's rubbing from where the paint is gone but I have CMC plates in my garage anyway because I plan on going to 35s later. Did you hit the pinch weld with a rubberizer afterwards? Keep up the good work on your vids Rob!

 

35s going to be trimming a lot. I went with -20 offset wheels on my 33s and ended up using a jigsaw to trim more. I think I finally got it.

For the pinch weld I applied silicone along the cuts then sprayed with undercoat.

Rubbing is now coming from hitting the tips of the fender undersides. Cutting this weekend, but not by much. Wish someone made a new inner fender well for bigger tire/wheel sets.
