    Possible?

Can you get a small diesel engine into a tacoma - I've been thinking about this in case my engine ever goes out.

Well of course you can. You would just have to figure out the electrical mess... You can put essentially any engine in any vehicle, given space, time, money, and know how. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probably more cost effective to buy a Hilux? Yes...

It's like any engine swap, with enough time, money and know-how, anything is possible... Probably wouldn't be worth it though because of the cost associated with buying a new engine, all the components and the custom installation. You'd most likely have better luck buying aHilux and importing.

I was under the impression that you cannot import a helix... not to mention the body of the helix is ugly IMO

You can import a Hilux, it just depends on how many headaches and how much red tape you'll have to go through in order to do so. You may also have to modify the vehicle to meet US laws or emissions. You'd be best off finding someone who does this for a living and is familiar with the paper trail.
