yeah, if you're wiring a switch for the aux lights it's nice to have a continuous power supply like the battery. just don't forget them on or it'll kill your battery

Subb'd for near future reference. Great work on the conversion. Of all the behind the grill set-ups, I have not seen one done like mine.

haha, your mount looks solid man, but yeah i wanted something i could just pop on using the pre-existing bolts without having to weld

awesome write up, just did mine over the weekend. did the same basic mounting, mine are behind a billet grill instead of a grill craft. Also I brought the mount forward a little farther because I don't have a satoshi.
Need to do the HID conversion now because the light output is kind of disappointing.

Made a mounting bar identical to yours. Only using the two outer bolts though..
Have these mounted behind my stock grill right now, until I satoshi it.
Also did the same switch method, with the 12v wire hooked to an add a fuse under my dash, so the lights are on with ignition only. Although the light in my switch doesn't work.

One question, how big of a difference did you get from stock hella 500's, to the HID swapped hella's? My headlights are DDM 35w 6000k HIDs and im debating whether to drop the coin on 55w HID's like yours

Never used the Hellas with the stock halogen bulbs, I upgraded them as soon as I got them. I've heard lots of guys saying they're disappointed in the stock bulb light output, including the post right before yours. Do the 55W HID upgrade.

Yeah I'm pretty dissapointed with them stock haha. So if I have 6000k 35w heads, should I get 8000k 55w for the hellas so they match?

yeah, should be close. the higher wattage tends to wash out the colour a bit, so that the bulb emits a whiter hue when you're going 55w compared to 35w. just search for a conversion chart online if you want to match them up perfectly. personally, i like a whiter light with less blue.

What type bulb did you use? I understand the 55w 6000k, but is it H4, H3, 9005, etc.? I tried using the HIDs from my fogs since I no longer have a stock bumper. My bulbs are too long. A little help Please. Thank you.

great write up! I just finished converting Hella 500FF with the DDM Tuning 55w 5000k slim kit. I tested before epoxy and they are blinding...can't wait to complete the install on the truck tomorrow. It took almost 3 weeks for the HID's to ship to me all the way from China...not from DDM's address in San Diego. My ballast look identical to the OP but they don't have DDM imprinted on them.

A bit of advice for those converting....careful with the epoxy....on one of the lights there was a big enough area for epoxy to drip through around the bulb and it leaked into the housing that is sealed. See below:

    Here's the good one....

    Snug like a bug...

Here's a drop of epoxy that slipped through the tiny areas around the HID bulb and the reflector housing...

Ya the product looks exactly like yours except the ballast don't say DDM on them. In the future I'll call DDM Tuning and order over the phone and see if they have the kit "in stock"....like in California haha :p

That single drop of epoxy drives me nuts but with them behind the grille I might forget all about it...I'm thinking of spacing them out a little more too but was trying to see how it'd work with them between the vertical bars in the grille.

Thanks again for the great write up...without detailed pics I would have probably not attempted to convert the Hella's to HID and mount behind the grille...but it was so easy!

Glad to help, just ordered another set of HID bulbs 'cause one of my fog lights burnt out after 2 years of constant use. Went with 4500k this time instead of 5000k, still shipped out of Cali though

Heads and fogs are super easy, just wire up the ballasts and plug the bulb into the housing!

Got my DDM kit drop shipped from china last week and the box looked like the one from Ace Ventura - of course one of the bulbs didn't work. They're drop shipping another pair of bulbs to me now so who knows when they'll arrive (tracking system is horrendous). I paid the extra $ for the ballast mounting brackets and they're borderline tin foil.

Where are you guys mounting your ballasts??
