Hella Supertones Horns install guide

Hey guys...wanted to give back to the community that has taught me so much.

Hella Supertones horns are extremely popular in the Subaru community, and I had some on my STI before I sold it, so I was familiar with the install. I'm not sure if anyone else on here has them or not.

These are 118 dB horns that replace your stock horns. They are not a train horn or even close to as loud as that, but they are much louder than stock, and defintely will get the attention of anyone who's about to cut into your lane, pull out in front of you, etc.


I bought them at Summit Racing for $70 shipped. Each kit comes with 2 horns and a relay.

I had to install a corner bracket on them so that I could mount them where most people mount their lights behind the grille.





All you need for this job is some wire (I used 14 gauge), and some crimp spade connectors. The kit comes with a relay that you wire directly to the battery since the horns take more juice than the stockers.

This shot shows the relay. It has four spade connectors. # 30 goes to the battery, #87 goes to the horns, #85 is the ground, and #86 ties into the wiring that was attached to your old horns. It's kind of hard to tell from this picture, but I mounted the relay on the sheet metal in front of the battery, between the radiator and the headlight. You can also see in this shot that I ran the ground just behind the relay bracket.



The next step is to run the wires from #87 on the relay to one of the spade connectors on the hella's (each horn has 2 on the back).

Next ground each horn by running a wire from the other spade connector on the back to a ground. Here's a shot of where I grounded mine (just to the top right of the horn)


Also shown above is where I mounted them, using a 10 mm nut and a washer, on the top of the radiator support beam.

Tip:

You might want to cover those bare spades with something to keep water out. Remember it's DC and corrosion is a problem on DC wires. Since it's just a horn and is almost never on it should not be a problem but one side of the relay is always live.

Suggestions: Insulated spades, heat shrinkage tubing, Just plain electrical tape, Or even something like grease, like Penitrox rated for that application.

Those things are awesome. I had them on my 96 mounted in the grill. Nice & loud!!

 

True. The connections are all covered in electrical tape. I took the picture before I covered the connections, so that people could see how it's all hooked up.

I have them on my STI and they are nice and loud.

 

Trying to decide if I should paint the housings white instead of the red...what do you guys think?

Personnally I'd leave them as is, they look like eyes. I actually did a double take on the "picture" and could only imagen in real life.

 

One of my future projects will be to install a quad array of these with relay harnesses. Sometimes you just have to get the attention of stupid drivers.

Sorry for Chiming In late. Look Good, Nice Write-Up. Truck Looks Awesome (There I go Second Guessing My SilverStreak Again). I'd Leave 'em Red or Paint 'em Black. I Don't Think I'd Like The White. But They'd Look Good Red, with a Set of Lights Behind the Grill with 'em.
