New owner of an '04 here. First foreign truck I've owned, and I must say I'm impressed by the overall quality. I've owned a '71 F250 Highboy, 78 F150, (2) 85 F150 step sides, '89 F250 Lariat and a 94 Ranger. Done all kinds of work on all of them. The Ranger finally did me in with the terribly rotted frame. I just didn't want to weld any patches to an already questionable frame. I started looking into these Tacomas and found most of them here on the east coast had new frames installed as part of a recall. Toyota must have surely lost $$ on that recall, but hey, if the MFG is willing to stand behind their product and either buyback the trucks or replace the frames, that sounds like customer support to me. Not sure if Ford or GM would do the same.
When I rolled under this truck, it was completely dry, no leaks what-so-ever, and at 200K+ miles that is amazing. I saw the CV type driveshafts, rack and pinion steering - all drive train U joints had zerks. The frame had recently been changed to new - my decision was made. It's only a 2.7, but would have blown the doors of my 3.0 Ranger in torque and mpg. Happy new owner - enough said.
