If it’s the same t case as 2nd gens (which I’m pretty sure it is?) there’s a triangle shaped tab on the side of the actuator that you can remove with an 8mm socket. Behind it is the gear that actuates the fork in the case, you can try switching between 2/4/4lo and have someone look to see if it’s functioning.

it's your front actuator, shitty Toyota design, will be replaced for free if you still have warranty.
Happened on my 2nd gen, and another member with a 3rd gen had this problem recently.

Well as soon as I’m back near my dealer in a week and a half maybe I’ll let them. In the mean time, if anyone has any more suggestions while I’m out on the road without a toolbox I’m all ears. Certainly don’t want to spend all that time in 4WD.

..given the situation and this truck being new to me, do any of you foresee risk in just driving it around in 4H on dry, paved roads indefinitely? Will my mileage be terrible? Will it potentially cause other issues, over heating, etc?

Bad idea, unless you won't be making any turns.

    Form follows function
You’ll cause binding of the 4x4 components. There is no way to open the center diff/transfer case, so when you make any turn of the steering wheel you’re at risk of breaking stuff.

Does the factory tool kit have a 10 or 12 mm wrench? You could just pull the front driveshaft. 8 Bolts.

    Turn it off.

Turn on truck without motor running. (Press on twice without foot on brake if automatic)
    Shift to N
    Then change to 2hi.

    See if that helps
If not try switching to 4lo.

I'm guessing when you attempted to switch from 4lo you fucked something since you said you weren't at full stop in neutral.

Hopefully didn't mangle the gears too much.

Care to share how it happened to yours?

If i remember right it involved donuts and the wild idea to switch from 4hi to 2hi while spinning wheels in the snow.

I think this guys is more like Josh's fuck up that same trip hahaha

Oh who cares how it happened on mine, there are over 100 people on TW with the same problem that keeps happening over and over again, it's another shitty design from Toyota that they won't fix unless there will be a lawsuit along with dozens of other issues with 2nd and turd gen have now.
    Bring back manual shifter!

You can drive on paved roads in 4H, its not immediately fatal. However, you can break drive train components. You will feel the front wheels bind up if the turns are too sharp. This is because as you go around turns your left and right tires travel arcs of different lengths. So the mechanics and shafts that are between your left and right tires are being put under additional strain. Can you find a dealer/mechanic local to you now?
