I just talked to an engineer yesterday from my brand. He said "when you figure it out, call me back"

OP: Mount a pushbutton switch wired to the brake pedal switch next to the pushbutton start button. Reach in and push both buttons at the same time: engine starts. It would be a transparent mod which won't affect normal operation. Accidentally hitting the switch would just turn on your brake lights.

I'm sure someone could find a way to hurt themselves doing this, so you are on your own as far as the safety and liability of doing so. I don't plan to do it to my truck.

So you have to use 2 different key fobs? Can't just use the factory one? What brand is it?

Not sure I buy this... Most degreed engineers go right from HS to college and get their degrees (myself included). They then get hired into industry and usually have little experience in the industry.

I'm sure there are plenty of techs that transition into industry, but "most" going back to school for 4-5 years is unlikely. Mad respect to their skills, but they aren't engineers.

For the OP- I support your desire to warm up the vehicle, even if just to defrost the windshield. I'd support the remote start fob as well.

Me warming it up is more of getting the cabin to a comfortable temperature; I park outside my garage when I'm doing projects inside the garage and in the middle of the summer, I like to let the A/C cool down the cabin before I start driving.

You know I didn't think about that but yeah, I would be ok losing it. But now that you mention it, there are other times when the ACC needs to be switched on (for other reasons besides the radio) and this may not be the best of ideas afterall...

Honestly the remote start is the way to go if someone could just figure out how to get it to work with the factory key fob and to where you don't have to start it twice.

So techs are more knowledgeable than engineers then?

I'm on topic. There is going to be no way to bypass the brake pedal without illuminating the brake lamps or turning on ABS/MIL light

They're are many types of remotes for these trucks. I've even looked at one by Viper that will use your smartphone to start your truck! But, $600 bucks has me reluctant to pull the trigger. I've read on TW forum a while back that some member found a remote starter kit that used the factory remote...push the unlock button 3 times to start the truck. I can't remember what brand name he was using. So, yes there are options out there for remote starts...just not from the Dealership yet.

meh depends how cold it is. I've asked numerous mechanics this. If its -20C out sure give your car a 2-3 minutes to warm up. If its summer just drive.

Letting it warm isn't the issue if its just a minute or two. But if you're letting your truck idle for 10minutes to warm up then thats a bit much.
Hell with my 06 Jetta TDI idling does fuck all. It only will warm up enough for heat in the winter with load on the engine. I could let it sit for 20min and it still won't be warmed up enough for heat.
if you work on them you should know different vehicles are built to different standards. Hell big rigs are built to the point you pretty much never need to turn them off. Wouldn't say do the same to your tacoma.

when it comes to electrical engineers that try to tell us electricians how to actually wire and install stuff I laugh. Majority of them are idiots. They have never stepped on a job site and think they understand how one works. I've had prints call for one wire size and then do the calculations from our code on what you need for that distance and got something different.

Not to mention the amount of times an electrical print calls for one thing in one place and a mechanical print calls for something in that same spot. These engineers are too stupid to even consult with the other trades engineers how the hell am I supposed to trust they know half of what they are saying. These idiots couldn't even put a 90 degree bend in a conduit if you showed them how to.

Engineers in general are all idiots. Majority of what they say/do is theory. May work on paper, but not in practice.

Not positive guys, but pretty sure the brake/start interlock is a Fed safety thing.

Ignoring wether or not starting and idling and remote starts are good or bad, to answer OPs question:

Press the button once, then press and hold till it fires up The screen will pop up with check charging/radio will turn on. Just keep holding. Takes maybe 10 seconds
