Hello gentlemen.... I could really use some help locating the factory brake controller plug in my 2012 v6 Tacoma. It does have the towing package, and I have located "a" plug in the area I have read to look behind the kick panel. But the plug I found does not match the Tekonsha 3040-P wire harness. This is the plug I found:
    file_zpsjkj9tq9k_ef08de2200b1bf2fb4e5baae61b44b9b2220a19c.jpg

And these are the wires connecting to it:
    file1_zps3w3mhyss_0eb6a95c1ef601c59e541d6ce6f4985101211df6.jpg

Is this the wrong plug? The brake controller I bought is the Tekonsha Primus IQ.

This is driving me nuts. I've even watched this youtube video which details the install for my model year. The harness I found was in the exact spot (circled in red below) that the guy in this video pulled the plug from:

On my 2015 the brake controller plug was up and to the left of the OBDII plug. It was behind a large wire bundle and I tore up my hand getting it pulled out from behind that mess.

Here is the mess you see in the background.

Here is where I finagled out to, basically right above the parking brake pedal.

And for fun here is where I ended up mounting the controller.

In that screenshot of the youtube video mine was not taped up and it was behind that bundle of wires higher up.

Thanks @snowcrabpg, that helps. I have a remote starter installed that appears to have made an even bigger mess of things. I'll look more towards that OBD connection.

Bonus points for the identification of the mystery plug I found. hahaha

Also, my plug was a bit higher, I didn't even bother removing the kick panel or anything. I just felt around the wires until I felt the plug and gently pulled it back around.

Do you have the Toyota pigtail that came with your truck, it's in a plastic bag in glove box.

thinking about it, that plug you already found I "think" is the ignition switch plug based on the amount of pins and the general location.

@jake72 I bought it used over a year ago. No pigtail in the glovebox. But I have the wire harness from Tekonsha that should plug into the factory plug.

@snowcrabpg Ignition switch for what? It wasn't plugged into anything when I dug it out.

What color wires are going to the factory plug? That might help me locate it, although I won't get another chance to look until Thursday.

I found mine just maybe two months ago or less. It was way up there and taped up pretty well. I was hesitant to try to pull it out of that tape by the plug like some have said they've done. I tried to undo the tape a little first, but once I was able to get my fingers on the wires below the plug, it actually was a pretty light tug to pull it down.

Anyone else have pics of where/how they mounted it? Right now I actually just have mine velcro'ed on the left side right below the cubby door. I didn't plan on leaving it there, assumed I'd be hitting it with my knee on my way in and out, but it actually hasn't been an issue there. Still, I should have a better, more permanent spot for it.

Way up where? Is it on the fender side or on the same side as the OBD connector? I was planning to remove my kick panel in search of it tomorrow.

@PA452 How accurate is this video based on your experience? I'm going to check this location tomorrow.

Fender side or OBD connector side? Eh, I don't really know. I wouldn't really say either. I was able to get to it without taking anything off. Really hard to explain how to find it though, I could actually hardly see it up there. I too pulled down a different plug first (not the same one you were looking at), then realized it was the wrong one. The right one I mostly could only feel it. Based on what I had read, it seems like it's not in the same place on all trucks. For example I found some pics online of where some guys were finding it, and it was definitely not in the same place on mine.

Hard to follow what he's doing in that video, but like that guy, mine was taped to a bundle that went way up high and it was on the back of the bundle. Like I said, I literally could hardly see it. I was shining a Surefire with a small mirror on an extendable rod to spot it. I was able to get my hand up there to where it was. Pretty much had to half lay down on the floor to get to it.

Here's how I have mine at the moment. It was intended to be entirely temporary, just stuck it there to get the trailer home. But I've had it there for a little while now.
