I’m pretty confused. The end result is like is a really basic website with no ads using one of the domains I recently purchased.

I’m so confused on where and how to start. I think I need to host the domain someplace? Then build the site?

I am looking to simply have a web presence that will provide customers some basic info and how to contact me. And I’d like to pop in in search engines when people use key words to increase traffic.

    totally overwhelmed.

You mention customers. Are you looking to have a store?

You need the domain (registered via registrar), hosting, dns (usually included with hosting), then web design/development, and finally SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to get search hits.

I suggest hostmonster for hosting your site and registering your domain name. Do you have a good understanding of how the magic works behind the scenes on the internet?

You can also use wix.com or wpengine.com, as close to drag & drop website design as you can get.

I suggest squarespace.com Building websites can be fun, if you like that kind of thing. But, it sounds like you just want a site and you're starting at ground zero. Squarespace provides all of the technical underpinnings leaving you time to build the site.

Or do you want to build from scratch?

    To expand on this,
    • Registrar - these are services like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or even Google themselves now sell you domains.
    • Hosting - this is basically paying for cloud storage to "host" the content of your website. A lot of registrars like the ones mentioned above, also will sell you hosting. BUT you can opt to go with a separate hosting service.
      • If you opt to go with a separate hosting service, this is where it gets more complicated. You need to provide your registrar directions where your site is hosted. These involves going into the DNS settings to define parameters such as CNAME records, etc.
    • Website Itself - one of the more popular self hosted platform is Wordpress. It started off as a blogging platform but has since expanded to have lots of options for general websites to ecommerce. To run wordpress, you have basically have to unzip & upload to your Hosting the install files. Once the files are uploaded, you can then navigate over to your Domain and actually start setting up and adding content.
If you aren't wanting to read into, learn, and tinker with all of these settings, the most straightforward solution for you is to go with an all-in-one offering like wix or squarespace.

So, you need a website which is the files people will download and look at using a browser, like Chrome or Internet Explorer. These files are going to be photos and html text files. Html is just a markup language, meaning your text plus some codes that give a browser directions for how to display your text. You'll need to keep these files on a host site which will offer your viewers plenty of bandwidth and associate your website's name with the collection of files.

Mind me asking what your site's about?

    Not at all.
we are manufacturing level 2 isolation gowns for the COVID response, from
Within our existing company (that wasn’t a covid gown company).. So in addition to all of the marketing and stuff we are doing, I bought up some domains to point people to so they could get product info and how to reach us if they wanna purchase etc. so far we sold nearly 8 million of them. All USA made too.

this is a decent size ask.
I narrowed it down to the main functions.

Need to buy domain and point record to hosting so ppl can get to it (I use namecheap)
    Wordpess site can be free
A place to host the site (I use aws lightsail 4 bucks a month)

    Nice -

Do you have an IT department or a company doing your websites now. This is pretty simple stuff, if you've done it before. And places like squarespace are pretty simple for regular folks, if you don't want to get the imperial forces of IT involved. (As a long time corporate IT guy I totally get not wanting them involved.)

Don't forget that sqaurespace and wix give free trials. It's pretty easy to crank out a site and see how it goes, then pay for it if you like it.

They also handle the hosting and all the technical stuff, and provide great tech support.

Unlike me, I provide terrible support. Well at least that's what my one yelp review from when I was no longer contracting said. My employers loved me

I'm a whore, I'll sell myself. For a modest fee you can buy my time. My contract doesn't even negate the possibility of using me as a +1 at a terrible wedding or an excuse to avoid drinking with someone you despise.
