ok so I was doing the uni filter mod and as I "gently" removed the cover to the air filter, the back tab snapped off. It still seems to seat properly so I feel ok driving it but I cant find just the top of the pump anywhere. Seems I have to buy a whole new pump just to get the cover. Any suggestions

holy thread revival batman, just a quick bump. I know a lot of guys on here have had to replace their secondary air pump, hoping maybe someone saved the old one and I can get the top of it from them.

HPTuners will allow you to delete the SAI system. There’s a thread on here. Note: Off road use only...

EDIT: if the cover is cracked, it’s not needed. Not all years actually even had a cover.

The second part of your question has been answered so here's the answer to the first part of your question: The secondary air injection pump helps your catalytic converters warm up faster to reach peak efficiency when you first start your engine by piping air into your heads to help unburned fuel ignite across your cat's membrane. Or something along those lines. I think that the 13's and up also will run the pump about 15 min or so after you shut the motor down to help cool the Cats by circulating air as well as pull moisture/condensation from the exhaust system to keep the little crappy foam filter serviceable. I cannot confirm that last bit however.

Now, on to your original post, what exactly did you break? Pictures would help. When you said you broke the back tab, are you talking about the housing or just the cover plate? Let me see if I cant find a picture.

Yours might look like this (minus the Unifilter unless you've already done the mod which I'm assuming you have):
    https://****************/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/air_breather_filter_mod_10.jpg

Or yours might have a cover plate over it like this:
    https://****************/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/air_breather_filter_mod_02.jpg

If yours has the cover plate over it, that isn't really necessary and can be discarded. It is mainly to keep dust out of the SAI housing but since you are replacing the crappy foam internal filter with an external unibreather filter, it really isn't necessary anymore. It just looks more aesthetically pleasing on the eyeballs.

To not be a turd to give credit where credit is due, the photos were pulled from:

To be clear, I am not talking about the cosmetic cover. I was doing the unifilter mod, and when taking off the top of the pump (part that the unifilter actually clamps to, see the diagram with arrow in first post) the tab on the back that holds it on broke.

Also, the junkyards around me rarely have a tacoma and if they do its almost never a 2nd gen with the 4.0 L engine sooooo junkyard isn't really a good option. I know a lot of people have had to replace their pumps so I am hoping someone has a take off I can scavenge.

Check 4Runners too, they have the same engine around the same years with the SAI system. The pictures I posted were from a 4 runner.

Also, when your ‘12 air pump fails and you go in for warranty, you don’t want them to be able to say, “The cracked and glued housing caused the failure. Warranty denied”. Be sure to save the foam filter, so you can put it back in when the pump fails.

I thought the air pump warranty was something like 10 years on the ‘12s.

well color me surprised, wonder if they warranty it just for the broken tab?

edit: nope, looks like they only replace them when moisture in the pump causes a CEL. the search continues.

I think there was a TW member that took his ‘12 in for air pump warranty with a unifilter and they wouldn’t do it because of the filter. Then it went something like this. “If I go home, take the unifilter off and put the foam filter in, will you warranty it?” “Yep, no problem”.

Sounds like Toyota has given the dealerships specific instructions on that warranty item, and he got the straight scoop from the mechanic (or service manager).
