I think the trick is just finding wheels where the window doesn't have a lip manufactured into it.

Tried the Summit Racing 84s today, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-84-5883/

arrows to show where it's rubbing the caliper.

I’m running 17x8 Pro Comp Rock Crawlers, and although Extreme Terrain claimed they would fit, they actually were compressing my calipers. I went out and bought Dorman universal spacers (just for the front) and they now clear.

I’m not sure why some people rub with the D window, while others don’t.

This makes so much sense! That’s exactly where I was rubbing. When you bought yours, did the listing claim they would fit. Extreme Terrain claims they fit, but in my experience (and apparently yours) it’s the lip that is the issue.

I did the same thing. One thing I did notice was they came out of the box bent which could lead to rubbing when the fitment is so close. I just used some 1/4" spacers as well.

1/4” exactly. I was a little worried that the mating surface on the steelie wasn’t completely flat, like an aluminum wheel, but the steelies are technically hub and lug centric in a way because it’s hub centric with conical lugs. I just made sure the lugs were evenly tightened to 83 foot pounds and there seems to be no issue.

i was wondering if maybe the rims were a bit bent!

Out of the 6 I got every single one was bent out of the box. I'm not a fan of lug centric wheels because I've had centering issues but it seems to be working for now. The studs are a bit short though.

Can it be considered hub centric in a way if the wheel bore fits snugly around the hub? I actually have my truck going in for service next week, and i’m going to ask if longer studs are advisable.

That's the definition of hub centric. It essentially centers the wheel to the hub assembly using the bore of the hub and wheel making a tight fit. My lug nuts only have 3/8" of engagement or less. Without a spacer it's probably fine as more stud will show. No issues yet I just worry especially with a big tire like 37s in 4lo.

I just took some spidertrax spacers off my 99 4x4 tacoma if you're interested in them.
