    HI All,

I am new to Toyota vehicles, and Tacomas, and ODB II so I hope someone out there can give me an idea of how to proceed with some codes I have received.

The truck runs fine but seems bogged down now and then. I can hear a constant and sometimes loud ticking but I understand this to be the VVT so no concern (at least the Toyota tech doing the pre purchase inspection seemed to think it was normal)

My ODB Reader is a Bluedriver.

    The codes I get are:

    2 Confirmed Codes:

    P0022 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded Bank 2.
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1.

    4 Pending Codes:

P0012 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over Retarded Bank 1
P0022 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over Retarded Bank 2
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1.
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

I understand this to indicate that I most likely need to change my timing chain and also that my CATs are probably burned out. (something about pushing hotter than normal exhaust if the timing is out)

Soo... if all above is correct then why, after clearing the codes last week, would the Catalyst codes take 3 days to come back and the camshaft codes take a week to show up again??? Oh.. and can anyone tell me how a code can be pending and confirmed at the same time?

BTW I cleared the codes as one mechanic said It could just be the truck had not been getting timely oil changes and running it with new oil for a while could address deposits causing the codes. He said to run it for a month or so then clear the codes and see if they come back.

    Sincerely,

    Sean.

    Thanks jimmyh,

I will pick up the oil and filter and inspect those parts in the next few days. Once the problem has been addressed should the engine light go out by itself or will I need to clear the codes again then wait and see??

Someone needs to put a manual gauge on your engine and see what the real time oil pressure is. Your P0022 code could easily be from low oil pressure and the oil pump could be going out. You are correct after you make repairs you will need to clear your codes.
I just went through the same issue and code on my Son's 2007 Tundra and had to replace the oil pump to resolve the problem.
Please keep us posted as to what you find and what you did to fix it.

P0022 just came up on my wife's Tacoma, so very interested in the fix here.

Also, thanks Jimmyh for posting all of the informative PDF's.

For me, I pulled the passenger bank OCV filter in my wife's 06. It was pretty clean so I didn't pull the driver side. I ran a couple caps of Sea Foam in the oil for 50 miles, changed it and cleared the code. It hasn't come back on again.

Update: P0022 is back and now brought P0010 along for the ride.

Changed the oil, checked the OCV screen (it was clean), cleaned and power cycled the original OCV (this didn’t fix it), replaced the bank 2 OCV (this also didn’t fix it).

With all that work to the system, I would try clearing the code one more time with my fingers crossed it doesn't return. Not very helpful, sorry, but that's all I got.

I just got the joke by independently figuring out I screwed up. I replaced the bank 1 OCV originally. I compounded that mistake by using a Gates brand OCV. It lasted 5 days and took a shit. The P0010 is from the shit quality Gates solenoid dying. My P0022 is from the real bank 2 (driver’s side) OCV.

I am replacing them both with Toyota OEM parts tomorrow morning

I just joined the p0022 club....my mentor/auto wiz in socal suggested something similar to your remedy
how many miles have been put on the your wife's taco since the sea foam treatment?
did the p0022 code re-appear since your last post on the matter?

It's been a while. The CEL occurred around Thanksgiving. She puts about 300-400 miles on the truck a week...been 11 weeks. So there could be as much as 4k miles on it and it hasn't come back. It is the 2nd or 3rd time it's happened owning the truck the last 8 years and always happens on long trips where oil has been up temp for a few hours and with dirty oil (4k+ miles on the oil change). I clear the code, change the oil and it doesn't come back for a long time. Hopefully the added Sea Foam before an oil change here and there will keep it in check. Truck has 196k on it now and we plan on keeping it another 5 years or so, especially knowing yours has gone as far as it has.

appreciate the response bud....I am going to try the sea foam approach & hope for a resolve
some insight on my taco/p0022 code-
my CEL was on for a mere 5 miles & then turned off
have not seen it since (drove 300-400 miles up to now)
1st & only time in 350k+ miles having this CEL
    maybe a fluke CEL?
wondering if I am getting myself worked up over nothing?

Hmm. I would keep my eye on it but not worry much. Maybe clean the screens if it came back again. I know you change your oil religiously, and it seems with what I've read, that helps in this case. Ours just seems to be a fluke too, and now that I think about it, the CEL disappeared by itself on one of the 3 occasions I mentioned earlier. Good luck! Keep us posted!

FWIW, I had oil control valves stick on an Outback xt (subaru OCVs look almost Identical to Toyota’s) and I removed them and cleaned them and then let them soak in pb blaster. Between that and using rotella T6 oil(mainly for blow by, but is higher detergent being a diesel oil) The codes never came back for atleast 30k miles till I sold it and bought my Tacoma.
