Just bought a 1991 camry v6 manual with the 2vz-fe engine.
Had been sitting for a couple of years.
We just drove it 400 miles and ran heat and injector cleaner through it. WE have only been running premium gas.

We are having troubles with getting the engine to run well.
    Idles fine.
Engine runs rough from 1k to 3k
Runs great at 3k to 4.5k
Can not get it above 4.5k
Even parked trying to rev it, it will not go above that.
Redline is supposed to be at 6.8k

Hard to get going, bucks and knocks below 2.5k

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly narrowed it down to a timing issue. Fingers crossed. Above know what degree this engine is supposed to be running at?

we did have CEL come on originally and did a manual check of the codes and they came up as a knock sensor (due to bad gas) and then a starter position sensor (wire was just poorly twisted together, fixed with solder). went away after 100 miles on premium gas and now no codes.

So you let it sit for a few years with gas in it. Started it and drove it, and it ran bad? Separation of ethanol content in the gasoline. Be a very good idea to change the fuel filter as well. Very good idea.

Not sure of your mileage, but this crud doesn't atomize or combust very well.

nah he bought it from someone. He didn't let it sit for years. The timing is way off too i guess. He bought it to make it into a 24 hour le mans car for fun.

Yes we changed the filter before we purchased it. We put heet and fuel injector cleaner in tank before we even dove any place. Now has 600 miles on it with only premium. The other night
I was messin with the timing on the distributor and noticed that the cap is maxed out to the advanced side. when you retard the timing in runs shittier and this was confirmed by a backfire through intake. What i am guessing that happened was that the cam gears that were in the trunk were replaced and or the belt with it. My guess is that the belt is one cog off (5*) off. and would potentiay prevent the timing from being advanced any more, that is why im guessing it runs decent with high rpm and 1/4 throttle cause that would advance the timing and would have the correct amount of fuel/air mix for a lower rpm but has little power because of little inputs and correct timeing.

There won't be. Those engines are non-interferance engines.
