Seriously tailgate pads are awesome. Throw a large insulated pipe wrapper across the tailgate and under the pad for added security

The 2nd gen rail will fit. I installed it on my 3rd generation.

i've only ever used a hitch mount for bicycles, and the rail. Where do you put the front wheel?

Best of both worlds, toolbox storage and a bike rack.

I just bungi the front tires to the frame or use a cable lock.

I put the front wheel in my back seat so no one is temped but I can mount it sideways and still fits just fine

Went to Menards and got the polymer decking material and made a rack. Ordered a fork mount off Amazon. Mounted to d loops on bed side. If staggered, I could fit 3 or 4 bikes back there.
EDIT: TRUXPORT tonneau installed and forks don't rub with tonneau rolled up front.

I had the fork mounts on the canister of my rolling tonneau, I would bungee the front wheel to the rear wheel and then run a cable lock through the frame, each rim and then to the rear D rings.
