Tried to do a search on this problem with my new 2017 SR5. When taking off from a stop on occasion the acceleration takes a second before kicking in. Anyone experience this problem? Annoying when time is of the essence when making a left turn through traffic coming the other way!

Issue happening since Toyota starting cable less on gas pedal since 2007. More noticeable on 4 cyc. Automatic.

This does not apply to all Toyotas, but it seems the 3rd gen Tacomas, including the MT guys, have it.

My wife's V6 Rav4 has the electronic throttle and throttle response is instantaneous.

not for me...ECT is like a aspirin, a cure all for everything, including when making a left turn through traffic coming the other way or making a right turn when you have just enough break in traffic but need to be quick about it.

It is how the engine is at lower RPM. I assure you it is like that even with a manual transmission. Luckily I can shift much higher up in the RPM band to avoid it, but anything at roughly 2-2.2k RPM and below in this truck outside of 1st gear, and you are a snail.

For me it seems with ECT on, it kicks right now when you hit the gas vs ECT off which is the lag you get before a turbo kicks, even though these have no turbo of course. I'm learning to like the ECT more and more on my SR5...

Read this report, all detail about Toyota Electronic Throttle Control is here. If you don't have the issue then you are one of the lucky one.

"When the car goes into the limp-home-mode it is because the accelerator and engine control computer and the throttle are not talking to each other in a way that they can understand. The engine control computer shuts down the signal to the throttle position motor and a set of springs in the throttle set it to a fast idle, fast enough to get the transmission in gear but not so fast that driving may be dangerous."

Agreed, my old 08 nor my 2015 have never experienced this, give it gas and let out the clutch and they move instantly!

This is a safety problem I have experienced first hand with my new SR5 and a rental car, a Hyundai Sonata in a trip through Florida. 1,200 miles of scary when you have to make a left hand turn through heavy traffic relying on acceleration to make the turn and the car goes limp!

I want to thank all of you that have posted on this thread and the one Cclogan8 originally posted. This could save a life! I'm going directly to my Service Manager on this and talk to Toyota about this. Hoping ETC in the interim will keep me safe but think about it..............how many people jump in rigs without the knowledge you good folks have provided here?
shakerhood, on a MT maybe, not a AT. And the problem here is that the "limp" doesn't happen 100% of the time! Want to be safe? You have to stump the brake and keep the throttle punched. Great fricking fun like looking at the Xmas tree at the track but this time you are simply trying to make a left hand turn into your driveway while traffic is coming at ya at 50 mph! Fun, fun, fun! Good luck!

I could only drive my SR5 with ECT on until recently when I took it in for the 5k service. I whined about the lag and they did the software update on the transmission, as per the TSB. Now I don't use the ECT button anymore because the lag is gone. Shifts way smoother too.

Did you have to whine about the lag issue in order to get the software update or does that get done regardless @ 5k?

OK . I am here hehehehe
From what I am reading , the above members have already answered the question .
If I can add anything it would be to make sure your transmission was properly filled with fluid when the truck was sold to you .
    Can you verify this ?
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...be-low-on-fluid-directly-from-factory.405642/

Has the latest technical service bulletin been applied to your truck ?
I believe there are 2 revisions of the TSB at this time
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/t-sb-0077-16-rev-1.457782/

Both of the above well known issues solve " symptoms " of a hesitation problem . There are other hesitation issues as well , but these are the 2 big ones .
Considering we are diagnosing from a keyboard and not actually test driving your truck , it would assist all the guys that are trying to help if you could let us know what has been done to the truck up to this point .

If you can confirm your transmission fluid was properly filled and the tsb has been applied to your truck , it eliminates a huge issue in a hesitation diagnosis .

Majority of drive by wire cars I have drove has this slight hesitation while the computer calculates what you are asking it to do. Some are horrid and some are manageable. Ain't technology great...

I've noticed in mine when wanting to get on the move from a stop, best thing is to roll into the throttle.

17 does, had mine updated, but it is till has issues sometimes, even though I have the update, I'm going to check into the fluid but I would assume they would have checked it when I brought it in complaining about the lag and shift issues.
